Yes you are right Jl5080, don't believe with the hype when downloading any software in the software download site. Don't even trust the stars awards because many sites gives it away to any software, even the one that doesn't running, to gain a back-links from the software owners. For free antivirus protection, my favorite is AVG. Their link scanner is also free, great addition if you want to stay clear from those nasty websites because it scans it first far before you enter it. Another good recommendation of a free antivirus is Avira. If you want a little twist, Panda Cloud Antivirus can be your best choice. The security is based on cloud computing, where most of its aspects are leaved in the "cloud", community that is, so you will get a fast antivirus (technically).

Good advice. Especially the advice about thinking before you click on that message. The only thing I might add is to always backup any important data. If you have current backups any computer problem or failure is no big deal.

Great article. I've tried many of the free antivirus programs and AVG is one of the best. I'll have to try some of your spyware suggestions.

I think I ended up once getting the $14.95 version or so of ZoneAlarm - why is this not better than the free version? Good analysis of what 3 computer virus and malware protection we need, and assessing what irritates users of said programs the most. For me, it's having to manage the software more than I get to use the PC. GREAT POST!
