on 11/22/2005 Add 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar to the beginning of every load of wash. It keeps laundry detergent from forming residue and cuts down on dry time. This is a big help at the laundromat!!

on 11/22/2005 In more than 40 years of doing laundry and eight children, one of the best lessons I learned was to always wash my underclothes in a mesh bag and hang all underwear on the clothesline. All elastic lasts MUCH longer.

on 11/22/2005 Use a large safety pin to pin socks together when you take them off. This way they're already paired. Use different color pins for different people for easy sorting.

on 11/22/2005 If you spill something on your clothes and are afraid that it might stain, spray the area with hairspray before you wash. It works every time for me.

on 11/22/2005 If you don't have a lingerie bag for delicate items, use a pillow case instead. It works great on anything from nylons to sweaters. It's a good time-saving alternative to hand washing. Just tie the pillow case shut and toss it into the washer!

on 11/22/2005 I soak my whites in the washer overnight in hot water. You also use less bleach this way.

on 11/22/2005 Use a lingerie bag and place inside-out panties in the bag. Wash as usual. Lingerie bags are available inexpensively at your local dollar store. Don't overstuff, just buy more lingerie bags.

on 11/22/2005 Think more soap will clean better? WRONG! Put less clothing in the washer and use less detergent than called for. Suds should be no more than 1-2 inches high! An extra rinse helps. Use the warm (not hot) dryer setting to dry.

on 11/22/2005 Wash whites first in cold water with detergent to remove soil and stains. Then wash whites in hot water with detergent, bleach and borax.

on 11/22/2005 After washing your dark clothes in cold water, hang them up to dry rather than putting them in the dryer.

on 11/22/2005 To ensure your whites stay white, wash them in warm or hot water. To protect your colors and darks from bleeding or fading, wash them in cold water.

on 11/22/2005 Turn items with printed designs (such as concert T-sirts or football jerseys) inside out. This will prolong the life of the print. Also do this with wool items, such as socks, which collect "pills" of lint.
