on 11/22/2005 Eat with smaller plate, and use chopsticks instead of spoon/fork so you'll eat slower, cut down on carbs, drink hot tea after meals, drink lotsa water, no soda at all. I lost 12 pounds in a couple months and never gain weight! I still enjoy fast food, ice cream, cakes, whatever I'd like but only on cheat days (1-2 days a week)

Oh and cleaning helps too, your house is clean and you're slimmer!

on 11/22/2005 Eat a candy bar for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It will leave you satisfied and not hungry. You will also lose weight, because candy bars only have an average of 250 calories per bar!

on 11/22/2005 Check labels. If the lite dressing has 80 calories or less per serving (usually 2 tablespoons), it's a winner. You can use as little as 1 tablespoon and add some rice vinegar. You'll taste more of the salad. Also try adding lots of low-calorie extras to your salad, i.e. pickled pepper strips (10 cal/1/4 cup), button mushrooms, shredded red cabbage, and a sprinkle of red kidney beans. Having a salad before your meal cuts your capacity to overeat.

on 11/22/2005 It's fine to know you should cut out the sugars and eat more fruits and vegetables and work out. But you need the will power to implement these changes. You need to look at your life and your situation and decide what direction you want to go in. The only reason diets don't work is because most of us can't be bothered. We live in a society that wants everything 5 minutes ago. You need to make the decision to change your life and just stick to it.

on 11/22/2005 The Best Snack Foods

Think vegetables, fruits, nuts, and whole grains.

When it comes to healthy eating, what's sensible strongly depends on your dieting orientation. What's healthy for a low-carber is deadly for a Dr. Ornish follower; and, of course, it goes both ways.

Out of various vegetables, fruits, nuts, and whole grains, many are very good for you. Here's the list of 'snackable' foods all of which are so high in nutrients that they are recognized as functional foods meaning that may provide a health benefit beyond basic nutrition:

apples
beef
cheese
berries
broccoli
carrots
chocolate
cinnamon
citrus
cocoa
collards
corn
cranberries
cruciferous vegetables (like cabbage and lettuce)
eggs (especially yolk)
flax seeds
garlic
grapes
honey
leeks
fish oils - e.g., sardines for your snack
lamb - e.g., cold cuts
oat
onions
peanuts
pears
psyllium husk - add it to your snack shakes
red grapes
rolled oats - e.g., as oat bars
rye - e.g., as whole rye bread or crackers
salmon
scallions
soy - e.g., soy nuts for your snack
spinach
strawberries
tea
tomatoes
tuna
walnuts
wheat
wheat bran
whole grains
wine
yogurt

on 11/22/2005 Ten Tips for Kid-friendly Healthy Snacks

1. Too much of a good thing...

Beware of meal-size snacks: they can make any dinner a problem.

2. Vegetables can be more easily accepted as snacks.

Cut up carrots, celery, sugar peas, broccoli, or whatever your kids like and arrange a platter along with their favorite dip. I often mix sour cream (can be lower-fat) with garlic powder or minced fresh garlic and fresh chopped dill, salted by taste. I've tried it with many guest kids and everybody loved it.

3. Fruits may be better in salads.

The simplest salad is made of sliced apples shaken in a bag with cinnamon, vanilla sugar, and a little sweetener. Don't forget to sprinkle the apples with a couple of drops of lemon juice, otherwise they turn brown and will be refused. They can be eaten with fingers, too.

4. Make your own apple chips to replace the kids' favorite junk food ones.

Prepare apples as described above plus add a splash of olive oil, then shake'n'bake.

5. To add protein, make your own all-cheese chips.

Spoon grated cheese (any kind that melts well) on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. The heaps should be about half-palm size when flattened. Bake on medium until it melts, turn over and bake until light brown.

6. Let them choose.

On a divided appetizer platter (or in muffin tins, etc.) place these separately: string cheese pieces, nuts, fruit and vegetable cubes, or anything not too wet or sticky.

As an alternative, take softer foods and put them on toothpicks, or make larger cuts and put them on skewers.

7. Negotiate.

Another form of letting them choose: ask beforehand what they choose out of your list.

8. Drinks matter.

Nutritious foods can be liquid, too: milk, yogurt, fresh-squeezed fruit or vegetable juices, or their mixes count as good snacks especially in summer.

9. Frozen and jellied fruits.

Sometimes they are life-savers if your kid rejects whole fruits. Cut up some fruits and put them in an ice tray; pour freshly-squeezed juice upon them and freeze. Or, make jelly cups filled with fresh fruits. Try making them harder, add some chopped nuts, then cup them up into bit-size pieces, sprinkle with confectioner's sugar, and offer as candies. Or, make them softer and use for peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches.

10. Even the best snacks are useless if thrown in the trash.

It's a trial and error business. Sometimes, it's better to temporarily let your kids rule; sometimes, you can succeed pushing little bit harder to feed them healthier foods.

on 11/22/2005 In order to lose weight, you have to go back to the things that you probably don't want to hear: Exercise, eat right, don't eat snacks. If you can't resist the cupboard full of donuts and twinkies and zingers, then have a small party! Load them onto trays and the guests will gobble them up. Then never give yourself permission to buy them again. If that's a problem, then maybe you're like I was...I was using food for comfort. Nothing was as relaxing as snuggling down into my chair each night with a box of twinkies. I never realized how much they added up. One day, I realized that I was becoming grotesquely overweight. I got rid of the snacks, and I forced myself to run on a trampoline every night. It was hell. But it became easier. Thirty-five pounds later, exercising is one of the things that I look forward to every day. In order to lose weight, you have to consume less calories than you burn in a single day. But if you don't consume enough calories, your body will begin consuming its own muscle for needed energy. Start out with a 2,000 calorie a day diet. Keep carbs (breads, grains, etc) down to a mimimum. Go heavy on veggies like green beans, carrots, lettuce. Stay away from corn, potatoes, peas. Take a vitamin a day. Drink plenty of water. Absolutely NO SUGAR! And never ever ever ever skip a workout! That's how I did it. It was hard at first, but it got easier in a hurry. And I look great (never thought I would).

on 11/22/2005 Walk for 20 minutes, twice a day. Try walking inside where no one can see you. Set the stove timer and walk around the coffee table, up the hall, and anywhere you feel comfortable. Make no more excuses like being embarrassed about walking in public or "It's raining"!

on 11/22/2005 Buy a large, squared chocolate bar. Cut the squares individually. Leave them in the freezer (out of sight). Every day at 3 p.m., slowly suck on 2 squares only. Savor this "afternoon treat" instead of biscuits or cake. It helps you get through the afternoon and stops sugar cravings.
