on 7/21/2008 I think this topic would be better served by including specific techniques you employ when painting from a photograph (for instance: using an opaque projector or the grid method to sketch in the correct proportions, developing layers of color and building shadows by mixing paints either on your palette or on the paper; that sort of thing). It's a good beginning to an article, it just needs more to it to make it truly stellar.

on 7/21/2008 Good article. The paintings are very nice. You left out the part about having talent. Do you deliberately use photos with dark exposures or color cast problems to create a general mood that you will then sketch?
on 7/20/2008 I have used pictures as a more suitable background for my paintings. For example, when I painted a bird, I didn't like the picture behind the bird so I used another painting and inserted the bird in the foreground (like those crafty computer artists). Thanks for the tips so I can try more detailed work from an original photo.

on 7/19/2008 I think I'd better go buy some paints. I'm taking lots of nature photos this summer and maybe I could turn some into paintings.
