I used professional-strength Windex, soap and water, and then decided to use a solution of vinegar and water. Sure enough, it cut right through the grime. The windows at the hall are beautiful now. Everyone noticed.

Use newspapers to clean windows. No water. No soap. Just crumple up the newspaper and scrub away. It really works, particularly in dry, windy climates that just blow dirt.

We bought a home with atrium windows. I put windshield solvent in a squirt bottle (probably 1/4 solvent, the rest water), sprayed the windows with this mixture, hosed it down with the garden hose, then used a squeegee and paper towels. It works great!

Make sure that the window to be cleaned is not in direct sunlight as the sun will dry your window before you can, leaving horrible streaks.

Instead of paper towels, use a chamois - it works better. Keep chamois clean. Use it to wipe off squeegee and any streaks on window. For bigger windows, use a strip wand. Also, don't clean windows in direct sunlight.

Spray windows with cleaning solution. When wiping windows, use newspaper - black-and-white, not paper with colors. Wipe in a circular motion until the window is clean. This will cut down on lint caused by paper towels and certain cloths.

I use vinegar instead of soap or ammonia. It has the same effect and is not toxic. Ammonia is not safe to have in the house, especially if you have children. It can kill or damage lungs if mixed with other chemicals. Use soap first if you need to.

After you've washed the window, have a vinegar rinse prepared. Mix about 1/2 cup vinegar with a gallon of water. Blend well. Rinse the window with this solution. It will prevent spotting. Then squeegee the window.

The best window cleaner I have ever used is a mixture of equal parts alcohol and amonia. It also is the cheapest solution I have ever used.

on 11/22/2005 Try using the same liquid that you use in your car for the windshield wipers. It's cheap and really effective!

on 11/22/2005 You can purchase ammonia already mixed with some soap. It is called "Sudsy Ammonia" and works like a charm!
