For Gloriana,
What is the best way to pick a tomato? Take hold of the tomato, firmly but gently, and twist it until it snaps off the vine. If you prefer to cut it, just cut the stem close to the fruit.

I'm brand new to gardening of any kind, so I hope this question is not overly stupid. :) What is the best way to pick a tomato? Cut it off at a particular spot - pull it off the vine leaving the surrounding green intact?

Pick tomatoes, put directly in a zip lock freezer bag, and freeze. Take out as needed and wash under warm water to remove skin. Thaw and use.

I have found that I can put washed and dried tomatoes into a freezer bag. When I want "canned tomatoes," I put them on the stove with a little water and boil them with salt and a bit of sugar. The skins come off, float to the top to be removed with tongs.
