Great advice. We have babbling brook and washing machine soundscapes we play via our ipod and computer speakers which work wonders. There are a bunch of different ones which pop up when doing an amazon search. Make sure and get something with a minimum length of 20 minutes, and don't be afraid to play them fairly loud (within reason of course).

The most IMPORTANT is: BE RELAXED. In order to put baby to sleep we mothers need to be 100% relaxed. If we are not in good mood and relaxed you can forget about putting baby to sleep.

Soothing music, preferably with nature sounds, can be one of hte best ways to get a child to sleep. Among other things it turns their attention to listening, and the gentle repetitive sounds soothe them..and you.. Singing, if you have the time, is one of the best things you can do, softly..don't worry, it's your voice because from you that soothes, so no performance jitters! Good luck dear. You'll also be structuring her listening and awareness skills, as we have a deeper connection in our brains to music and sound than language in itself. Combine the two and a child's brain works much better for language later on, as well as being open to music, and developping a more balanced exchange IN the brain between the two sides..(one of the reasons why women are more creative and multitasker thinkers than men, who have less connections between left and right and more space betweeen than wom...

What if none of these work? I have a four month old and fight sleep until her eyelids literally close themselves. Then she only sleep in 20 minute increments. I have tried everything I can think of to get her on a normal sleeping pattern. As long as there is a pattern, I can adjust to her. Although I would very much like for her to sleep at night. She goes through phases where she will sleep through the night and take normal naps, then the next week she will be wide awake, and the following week she will sleep all the time. I don't know what to do. We have tried the cereal in the bottle at night and even tried juice in her bottle during the day because we figured if we keep her awake during the day she will sleep at night. That worked for a while but now she is back to her old tricks. Can someone please help me?

Many good suggestions!...especially a bath and as good of a routine as possible. Remember: Don't let a baby--especially a newborn--cry for more than 10 minutes or abandonment issues may set in. A baby merely needs to know there is someone there, and the younger babies are, the more they need to know they are not alone. Sometimes merely a light hand gently rubbing a baby's back or leg and a soothing voice can put them right to sleep, or back to sleep. I know, and you don't want to know how many children I had. As far as feeding cereal in a bottle goes: Don't make it a habit or the baby could develop an overweight problem. I witnessed this with a friend's baby. Today, he has a massive overweight problem, poor kid.

Lots of good suggestions. As a new grandma they will come in handy during my weekly babysitting. Maybe the baby cries because they are just not tired. We adults have the same problems of insomnia. Sometimes I think we are too regimented in routine leaving no room for spontinaity.

On dependency. Make sure you are not using this as a tool to put baby to sleep every night because they will become dependent on it as thumb sucking which is bad for the developement of their teeth and so is putting baby to sleep with bottle or nursing because the milk will stay in babys mouth all night. Making a schedule like bathing, reading, and singing to sleep is a much better method. You want to make a routine that will satisfy your baby but not bring on any type of dependency such as driving them to sleep. Turning off the lights before they go to sleep and not putting them completly asleep before you turn out the lights will bring on good habits for your baby and will also keep them asleep throughout the night. I have an article on this. Your ideas are great but then they need to be modified as time gos on when baby gets older. GREAT ARTICLE for the first 2 weeks of babys...

The baby is crying because he/she is hungry. The milk and or formula isnt satisfying.Mix up some rice baby cereal in that bottle .I guarantee the baby will sleep all night.
