on 3/9/2008 what is the difference in a "mile" and a "nautical mile"?
on 3/9/2008 Reckoning speed in knots and distance in nautical miles makes it easier for mariners to navigate (calculate a vessel's location and determine what course to take to get to another location). Speed in knots is the same as speed in fractions of a degree of longitude per hour. Given the longitude of the initial position of the vessel, it is easy to determine current longitude. Given the distance in nautical miles or degrees of longitude between the vessel's current location and a new location, and the vessel's current speed in knots, it is easy to calculate the approximate time the vessel will take to get to the new location.
on 3/9/2008 Reckoning distance in nautical miles and reckoning speed in knots make it easier to navigate - calculate a location at sea and the direction (course) to a desired location. One of two items giving a vessel's location is its longitude, degrees east or west of London, England. Nautical miles and knots translate easily into degrees of latitude travelled since the location of the vessel was last determined.

on 11/22/2005 Speed is a scalar. Vectors have a direction associated with them.
on 11/22/2005 Fathoms and nautical miles are scalar quantities; a knot is a vector quantity. You can say "That is X nautical miles from here" but you cannot say "That is X knots from here." Boats travel in knots, not "knots per hour."
