on 6/18/2009 Actually, Football is a collision sport. (:

But hey, OK article.

on 9/24/2008 Confidence is the key to making a tackle...you always need to play with confidence because if you already know you can't takle him before you try the battle is already over confidence keeps you pumped up and it keeps you focused on the goal so use it and have fun playing the game.

on 8/30/2007 People, I can,t stress this enough. WRAP. If hes bigger than you hit him low, unlless you are overconfident and dont mind getting ran over. but dont be scared. If he is a managible size put your face mask in his numbers. Also, dont doubt yourself. If you get scared or nervous you are probably less likely to make the tackle.

on 4/16/2007 Wrap, wrap, wrap, the best thing to do is wrap. If the guy is a lot bigger then you, you should probably hit him lower then you would hit your size. But whatever you do remember to wrap.

on 9/18/2006 In high school football face tackling is illegal, and need I say dangerous to perform the tackling technique. The rule book for the National Federation of High Schools says in section 4.3.i that " No player shall...Butt block, face tackle or spear." As defined in section 2.42.2 "...Face tackling is driving the face mask, frontal area or top of the helmet directly into the runner."

There are many different ways to teach tackling safely and legally. One thing they all involve is leading with the shoulder and keeping the head out of the tackle.

on 9/3/2006 One of the biggest reasons players miss tackles is because their afraid they might miss, get hurt, or think they can't do it. So my point is to deliver the blow to the running back before he does to you and not to have any intimidation.

on 8/28/2006 Run full steam at the ball carrier and hit him under the shoulder pads. Give him a stiff shove right as you make contact. Make him wish that he'd never heard of football.

on 8/28/2006 Run at them at full speed. Stay low so they can't just plow under you. Put your face mask on the ball, wrap them up, and slam the poor guy hard enough to make his head spin.

on 8/27/2006 Make sure your feet are shoulder length apart and you are on the balls of your feet. Stay low, the low man wins. Place your shoulder pad low on their numbers and place your face mask on the ball carrying side. This way you can create more fumbles. When you are tackling keep your arms near to your sides when you wrap up. Drive your hips through to create your momentum. Don't try to tackle with your hands, lead with your shoulder pad.

on 8/23/2006 Run at him full speed, and keep your head up so you don't break your neck. Then when you reach him, wrap up and push up with your body to take him down. Don't make arm tackles, it will mess up your arm.

on 8/19/2006 Go full speed toward the ball carrier. Lower your shoulder and head to avoid neck injury. Grab his legs and do a pelvic thrust.

on 8/8/2006 Keep your shoulders square, and make your head go to the inside (where the ball carrier is going). Keep your head up, as this will help you tackle and prevent injury. Stay low, and aim for the waist. Keep your legs moving to drive the ball carrier in the direction you want them to go, so they don't pull you. And finally: Listen to your coach in practice. I'm sure that if you play football on a team, then you have heard those general rules and more.

on 8/8/2006 DO:
- Hit low; around waist or thigh area
- Hit hard!
- Show no fear.
- Keep eye contact with the ball carrier until dropping down to make the hit (eye contact should be used only with a smaller player, bigger guys must be hit at the legs).
- Grab cloth and pads.
- Watch his waist/belt; this will help to avoid the juke.
- Pump your feet.
- Keep good position; knees bent and head up.
- Show sportsmanship; help the guy up!

DON'T:
- Lunge at a player; it's guaranteed a miss.
- Go for the big hit; just get the guy down.
- Gloat; you could get penalized!
- Lead with helmet.
- Plan to physically injure a player.
- Grab ankles or knees at the first stage of a tackle; the first stage of a tackle should be contact with the waist, chopping of feet, and then grabbing legs and pulling down.
- Be scared; footballs a tough game, and the harder you hit the less chance you have to get injured!
- Hit helmet to helmet; can result in concussions and head/neck injuries.

Tackling Stages:

Stage One (5 feet away from ball carrier) - Keep eye to eye if player is smaller, and run hard and fast. Keep knees bent and head up. If player is not small, make eye contact for half a second and focus on the weight.

Stage Two (CM's away from ball carrier) - Position yourself slightly under the ball carrier's stomach, and smack him with your shoulder pads. Keep running, accelerate before, through, and after a hit.

Stage Three (into the ball carrier) - Drive and pull ball carrier to ground. If you wish to, help the ball carrier up, as it shows good sportsmanship.
