Return to article: How to Get Rid of Indoor Gnats
on 5/5/2009 Thanks for the info it really helped
on 3/20/2009 What the heck happened to the set up of the article??? Banana peels also make gnats in warm weather. Make sure to empty the trash frequently.
on 11/19/2008 Thanks for the info!
on 10/29/2008 Great advice Thanks for sharing Angel
on 7/28/2008 I have gnats in the freezer! Why? How? They are lying on the shelf above the ice tray and also frozen in ice cubes. Will try the sweet coffee but not sure that will work. Maple syrup is too expensive to use! They are in the kitchen and elsewhere in house. Yuck.
on 7/28/2008 I have gnats in the freezer! My side by side has frozen gnats on the shelf just above the ice container. Have also seen gnats frozen into the ice cubes. How do they get in there? What is the attraction? Will try the vinegar or coffee treatment tonight as they are driving me bananas in the kitchen and even in my computer room.
on 6/29/2008 i have been living with these disgusting gnats for about a week. seems that they are more active at night and mostly around my kitchen sink. so gross... but after spending a weekend at home, i am seeing they are in the closets and the bathroom... so i have read the suggestion below and put vinegar in those areas... i am really looking 4ward to these little guys leaving.
on 6/19/2008 I tried the vinegar and it didn't work the flies and gnats just drank from it and then flew off. I found if you mix a little bit of raid in the vinegar they will fly off and then die. This works pretty well and doesn't leave harmful chemical residue all over the house, just in the bowl which could be thrown away.
on 4/29/2008 I know wine works, I am a wine drinker and in the summer I have to make sure the wine is corked and the wine glass is covered while not sipping! It is like that Alannis Morrisette song. The verse "A gnat in your Chardonnay". One gnat totally can wreck a whole bottle of wine :-)
on 4/29/2008 I have pictures of the eggs, how do I upload them?
on 3/3/2008 Great information and tips. Loved the video. Thank you!
on 1/15/2008 Fantastic tip Lisa! I kinda do the same thing with a barbecue sauce bottle for flies. Just leave a little sauce in the bottle and leave it open in an area the flies are bothering you, like at a cookout, and in an hour they will be trapped in the bottle.
on 1/5/2008 I used 3 of theses ideas in combination. I took baby food jars with holes in the lids and added coffee, beer and cola. I also set out an almost empty bottle of maple syrup along with the jars on the stove. That night you could tell the gnats went for the beer and maple syrup first. Thanks for all the help.
on 12/14/2007 Letting the soil dry out between waterings is a good idea in itself as it is better for the plant. However this does not always kill gnat larvae. They normally feed on moist organic material in the soil, when the soil dries they move to the next source of moisture, the ROOTS! Any of these remedies work and you can also buy or make your own yellow sticky traps to control adults and kill them before they lay eggs. Control larvae by cutting pieces of potato up and placing them on the soil. Remove them in about 24 hours and you should see small white worms with black heads(larvae) and/or small greyish brown gnats that dont have wings yet. Be sure to dispose of the potatoes in a way that the gnats cant migrate back to the plants, i.e. put them in the freezer first or seal them in a ziploc bag.
on 10/27/2007 Reply to flyniah- Do you have any fans in the windows of your home or could the bathroom ceiling ventilation fan be pulling them in from an open windown in the bathroom ?
