Return to article: How to Unclog a Toilet
on 8/10/2008 I put one of those blue tablets in the tank and then it disolved and my toilet clogged up. I read in a book to use vinegar and baking soda. That didn't work, I used a plunger and a snake and that didn't work. I found your site and did the dishsoap and hot water thinking this isn't going to work and knowing the next step was calling a plumber which I can't afford. I tried the soap and water, plunger a few times and now it is working great. Thanks so much. I really does work.
on 8/9/2008 Can I just say Wow!! Had a birthday party today, lots of kids, and my husband is at work.. I had already taken my nightly sleeping pills, and lo and behold, toilet was majorly clogged.. Plunged for 2 hours to no avail..In despair, I finally googled "how to unplug a clogged toilet" and found this site.. Poured half a bottle of Ajax in the toilet and let sit while I boiled a pot of water.. Poured the water from waist/chest level, and SWISH, down the water went!! HOORAY for the internet and 'home remedies'!!!
on 7/27/2008 The dish detergent idea totally works. My niece and nephew threw tons of TP down the toilet then a few hours later (after i already tried to unclog it) decided to actually take a #2 and clog the toilet beyond repair. I tried the plunger and the snake but this was so easy and simple. I boiled some water in a pot then popped in a cascade dishwasher dissolving square and poured it down from my waist level (the water pressure helps) and after a few plunges it just flushed away =] *kudos*
on 7/11/2008 Watching friend's house - know nothing of nothing - toilet clogs - doesn't work same as in Africa - what to do, what to do - turn off water (good advice from hubby) - soak up overflow with old towels (good advice from me) - friend just put in new floor - not sealed - said not to get water on floor - YAAAAA!!! Called friend - use Clorox (BAD ADVICE) - store guy said use plunger and rid x - didn't use rid-x (HARD WORK ADVICE) - Hubby not around, so I think - everything I know about America, I've found on the net, so I type in How to Unclog a toilet - watch the vid - try it out - NOTHING - Start reading the posts - find some liquid dish soap - boil up water... OGH!!!! It worked - been up all night - going to bed now and dreaming about a way to figure out how to invoice people for waste of time on bad advice... hmmmmm???? I thought so... Super website, discovered some other stuff - love
on 7/1/2008 It was a holiday and I couldn't go to the store to buy a plunger. There was a ball of toilet paper stuck in the toilet. I tried pouring 3 tablespoons of dish detergent, waited 10 minutes and flushed, did not work. Tried another 5 tablespoons, wait 2 hours, and voila, the toilet paper floated to the surface, just picked it up and flushed. Good as new....and no plunger required!! Thank you for the great suggestions and my apologies to the plumbers.
on 6/27/2008 The dish soap and hot water worked for me after the second try. After the first attempt was unsuccessful I put more dish soap in and left it for a few hours. I did not think it was going to work but lo and behold I gave it one last try and whooosh. I love this site!
on 6/18/2008 I never post anything online, but this worked so well I am compelled to talk about it! After several failed attempts to unclog the toilet (my 4 year old used a lot of paper towels instead of toilet paper)I was desperate.... almost went to Lowes for a drain snake. Before I was about to leave I just searched online and came upon this site. The dish detergent and hot water worked! I just let the water from the clog drain out of the tank for the most part, poured in some detergent, let it sit for about 10 min, added some hot water, plunged and flushed until it was gone. What an easy solution!
on 6/1/2008 I just came across this after struggling all day with whatever my toddler did to my toilet earlier. I have been plunging and plunging all day with no success. Finally I saw this and tried the dish detergent thing out of desperation and curiousity. I really have never heard of this and frankly did not believe it one bit. I literally plunged for over an hour throughout the day but then I poured about 1/4 bottle in the toilet, waited about 3 minutes, plunged 5 seconds and it was fixed! My wife and I are just amazed at this! If you are a disbeliever...believe! So weird!
on 3/7/2008 I didn't think it would work...but I gave it a shot! Here's what I did exactly: I added about 5 tablespoons of dish soap to the toilet bowl and then added about 3 cups of boiling water. I let that sit for about 10 minutes and then flushed and plunged at the same time. The first time didn't work completely so I repeated the same steps again. The second time worked perfectly. If only I had checked this site earlier today I wouldn't have spent the entire day plunging and plunging to no avail!
on 1/31/2008 *I just saw a comment from another user, and the point made by him/her bears repeating and is worth expounding upon: Cheap tools are just that: *CHEAP*. The buyer/user can expect them to break, malfunction, cause injury to the operator, and, (again) BREAK. Good tools are a worthy investment that should last a lifetime with proper care. My typical course of action that keeps me from buying junky tools when I can't afford what I need is to go to military surplus stores, second-hand stores, yard/garage sales, read classified ads for listings of tools for sale. And for gosh sakes, DON'T FORGET TO ASK YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOR OR CO-WORKER FOR A LOANER, but don't be put-off if someone doesn't want to loan a nice tool to you. I have a strict policy of no loans. I will happily take a tool/tools and help someone with repairs, but I do NOT just hand someone my tools. Ever.
on 4/12/2008 THANK YOU SO MUCH! *This* is what I needed. I am embarrassed to admit that I have never had to unclog my own toilet, although I am uncommonly handy and mechanically inclined for a girl. Even though my dad taught me to build and repair all sorts of neat stuff, plumbing was not on the list. We had a septic system and our own well, and he was VERY particular about how the plumbing was managed. Care was taken that the plumbing never stopped-up, and those habits went with me to college and beyond. Since we moved to Florida from the Sierras ~2 years ago, the toilets've been constantly clogged and my husband thinks I'm tossing Barbie dolls or something in there. The water pressure here sucks. I [heart] the video & the tip on the GOOD plunger and the snake w/the rubber sleeve. Soooo forwarding this to my girlfriends. THANK YOU!
on 1/28/2008 THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been online all morning and then found you, thanks to God. I prayed that I would be able to fix the toilet and I tried the liquid dish soap and it worked. Thank you for your online help, and thank God for helping me find you.
on 12/24/2007 MY TOLIET IS CLOGGED IN WHICH CASE THIS HAS THE WATER BACKING UP INTO THE BATHTUB,WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ASAP?
