Saddle soap and mink oil should definitley not be used on finished leathers as they are far too harsh for todays modern leather finishes. Conditioning is totally unnecessary on finished leathers you need to use protectors not conditioners.

I would not recommend saddle soap for unfinished leathers or any furniture leather for that matter - Saddle soap was made for saddles which are made of veg tanned, very hard leather - not chrome tanned soft leather!!!! The best products for unfinished furniture leathers (and all other types of designer furniture leathers) that are safe and won't darken unfishined leathers are Leather Only by Total Leather Care TX or SG5 from Advanced Leather Solutions CA. Both these products are backed by leather technicians - so if you have a problem they have an answer :-)

Excellent article. I didn't know anything about cleaning leather for years, and this is a bit of an eye-opener about some of the processes involved. My boots thank you too.

We have some leather recliners at the River that feel sticky all over. Does anyone know how to treat the leather. They are old but in good condition.

I used S.O.S. pad to remove ink stains from cream coloured leather couch. Worked instantly and didnt damage the leather. I would test it on inconspicuous spot if leather dark colour.

Recently purchased a new white sofa. A stain appeared in two places very noticeable and immediately I purchased a leather cleaner, which faded the color as well as made the one area kind of rough!!! I found this site and took some advice. I used Dove Moisturizing Milk body wash on a slightly damp white towel; wiped with a slightly damp white towel and polished with a clean, dry white towel! It worked PERFECTLY! This process even took out the rough spot left when my attempt to clean with the purchased leather cleaner! Thank You!

I had a cream colored leather ottoman with old and new ink stains. First I tried the leather cleaner we bought with the furniture. Then I turned to this site for suggestions. I tried 3 brands of baby wipes and none worked. I tried rubbing alcohol, didn't work but slightly damaged the leather. Hair spray worked to lighten the stains a little. The magic Eraser (which I love and use regularly on everything else) didn't do anything. The non-acetone nail polish remover completely removed the new stain (about a week old) and lightened the older stains (about 3 months old). I then treated with the conditioner and it looks 95% better. I think a lot depends on the age of the stain, the brand of ink and the leather itself. Have fun!!!!

I bought a used white leather soft that was lightly dirty and had a long, jagged black mark down one arm. First, I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to remove the black mark, then I lightly cleaned the rest of the sofa with another eraser. Then I used a leather cleaner and also a polish that I had bought to clean a Coach handbag. The sofa looks like new.

I bought a used white leather sleep sofa that was lightly dirty and had a large, jagged black stripe down the arm. I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and a soft towel to remove the black stain, then lightly cleaned the entire sofa with another eraser. I followed up with a leather cleaner and polish that I had bought to clean a Coach handbag. The sofa looks brand-new.
