Return to article: How to Treat Canker Sores
on 11/24/2008 Dissolve an uncoated aspirin on in your mouth and swish the saliva/aspirin around, concentrating on the canker sore. Do this a couple of times a day and your canker sore will be painless and healing fast. A miracle cure.
on 10/22/2008 thanks.
on 8/22/2008 Biotene in particular is a very effective toothpaste for preventing canker sores. Using regular toothpaste, I have canker sores nearly continuously. Using Biotene seems to eliminate about 75% of the sores. Eating live-culture yogurt or swishing a probiotic around in the mouth may help, too.
on 6/9/2008 Excellent article! Very well done.
on 4/27/2008 As a child I was constantly battling canker sores. Add braces and you have a kid with a perpetually painful mouth. I read somewhere that placing a REAL aspirin on the canker sore until the aspirin dissolved, then spitting it out, would help cure a canker sore. I tried it and I swear that canker sore was GONE, GONE, GONE, BABY GONE by the next day! Since then my canker sore outbreaks have decreased significantly but when I do get the first sign of one I pop an aspirin on it. It's almost like magic!
on 4/27/2008 Lemon juice works as a drying agent on cold sores and acne!
on 1/14/2008 Dont treat the outbreak, kill it forever: Licorice Root (or GA Extract) and BHT a food preservative will kill the nucleas of the cell: Its proven Science journal America and LicoriceBHT.com have all kinds of research on it.
on 2/1/2007 I've found two things that help VERY MUCH with canker sores. The first is a suspension called Carafate, ordinarily swallowed and used to treat ulcers, but instead of swallowing, gargle 2 tsps. for a minute three times a day, then spit out. Ask your doctor to prescribe the 14 oz. bottle. This'll last you a little while. If I feel a sore and I gargle before bed, I often wake up the next morning with the sore completely gone. The second is a topical dental paste called Triamcinolone Acetonide Dental Paste USP, 0.1%. This one you apply directly over the sore and it immediately helps with the pain. It sticks better than any other wax I've tried, and it actually helps heal the sore faster.
on 12/26/2006 This work like charm for me: At any stage of the Cold Sore infection 1. A thorough but gentle cleaning of the area by using Witch Hazel or Tea Tree Oil (no need to pop the bubbles) 2. Apply any kind of anti-Biotic ointment on the area affected 3. Dab and apply an even layer of “Baking soda powder” on the area directly 4. It might sting for a short while, you will feel the healing immediately 5. Alkaline is the trick to heal Herpes Simplex Virus infection. Brush your teeth regularly by using Baking Soda tooth paste (Arm& Hammer) and dabbing into Baking Soda powder, rinse off normally; this will reduce you Canker sore exposure 6. By the same token, bathing in ½ cup of Baking Soda will take care other Herpes Simplex related skin outbreaks (STD, Shingle) 7. Reduce your sour food intake 8. Eating Yogurt and food contains Live & Active Cultures (Acidophilus) will help promote better body immune system.

on 11/18/2006 I have found the best way to prevent canker sores is to use mouthwash for 30 seconds twice a day. Also, if you feel one coming on, you can use mouthwash to ward it away. But, you must use the mouthwash at the very first sign of the sore or it won't work. Don't wait until the white center has formed. At this point it may actually worsen the sore. I have used the OTC product Canker Cover with moderate success. It's a tablet applied to the sore that forms a gel protective cover. It's never completely healed my sores, but a few times, my sores have been mostly healed. Like the mouthwash, you must use it in the beginning to achieve good success. Also, get plenty of rest, try to eliminate stress and make sure you're getting plenty of vitamins and minerals. They are essential to protecting your body's immune system. I don't suggest holding an aspirin to the sore as another user suggested. It can burn the sore and actually worsen it.
on 8/25/2006 I have suffered from chronic, persistent canker sores for over a year now. I have found once you have a sore, swishing salt water or peroxide helps to reduce the pain temporarily. But the only sure-fire way to treat these nasty things, that I know of, is called temovate. It is a steroid gel that applies to the sore when it first starts out, still small. And the sore never develops past that point. You do have to have a prescription for this however, and I find if I use a lot I get a little bit dizzy. But it works very well.
on 8/13/2006 Till I finally went to my dentist and he prescribed a Prednisolone 15mg/5ml syrup. I rinse with a teaspoon for 30 seconds and swallow. If I do that at the first sign os a sore it stops the outbreak. Also use a non SLS toothpaste.
on 8/8/2006 My doctor told me that chewing gum and sucking on mints and hard candy can increase your stomach acid and cause canker sores. I've tried to avoid both and have not had a canker sore in four weeks. That's a record for me!
