Return to article: How to Treat a Mosquito Bite
on 8/8/2006 If you are bitten by a mosquito and the area around the bite is swollen, try this: Make some tea, wait until it cools off, dip a cotton ball in the tea and press it against the swollen area, hold it for a few minutes. Re-dip it multiple times. It really helps!
on 6/11/2007 When you get a mosquito bite, the best way to reduce the swelling (especially for those like myself with extreme allergic reactions-swelling wise), take out the itch, and suck out the venom; put a hair dryer on the lowest setting and point it toward the mosquito bite. If the skin around the mosquito bite starts to get too hot, apply some rubbing alcohol, and come back to the bite later. Using the hair dryer sometimes stings, but the results are amazing.
on 8/6/2006 I put the witch hazel on first to soothe the immediate itching, then painted on the clear fingernail polish. The fingernail polish leaves a shield over top of the mosquito bite, so even if you touch it by accident it doesn't start itching again.
on 8/4/2006 I use my pimple gel treatment (anything made with Salicylic acid) and the itching and swelling is gone in a few hours. Also, if you dissolve aspirin with a little bit of water and put that on the bite it works to dry it out.
on 8/1/2006 I find rubbing a generous amount of Purell (hand sanitizer) on the bite helps. Also, try cooling them down with some ice.
on 7/31/2006 My aunt gave me some Tiger balm and I put it on the bitten area. It really worked for me!
on 7/30/2006 We had a cookout a couple of nights ago and the mosquitoes attacked me all night, even after multiple spraying of Off bug spray. I ended up having 23 bites, all were swollen and itchy. I applied a topical acne medication, Differin, which I received from my dermatologist, and it relieved the itching and the bites were gone the next day.
on 7/28/2006 I didn't have Orajel, but I had Anbesol, and it worked the same. Anything with benzocaine will numb the area and instantly stop the itching.
on 7/28/2006 I went on a trip to Samoa and was bitten every day, at least 12 times a day, and that is even with protection. I used 8 cans and bottles of OFF spray. It did not help much. I got this tip from a local grocery store owner; Vick's VapoRub. For some reason the mosquitoes didn't like the smell. It helped keep the mosquitoes off of me and helped with the itching of the bites. My best friend went to St. Thomas and they told her to use Preparation H and she said it worked as a topical!
on 7/26/2006 Take an ice cube and hold it on the bite for as long as you can, until it melts or until your bite is numb. The down sides are that your fingers get numb and that it doesn't work for multiple bites.
on 7/25/2006 Use Windex to help stop itchy bites. I think it is the ammonia in it that makes it work so well. Dries it right out. Also good for pimples. Just dab it on and it really helps.
on 7/23/2006 No other itch cream works better than Vagisil. However, if I don't have access to Vagisil, I cover my bites with Scotch tape. It stops the itching somewhat, and prevents me from scratching it.
on 7/22/2006 Deodorant works. When I went to camp I used it all the time, and so did all the other girls in the group, even the counselor.
on 7/20/2006 Eat Marmite - and lots of it. It's packed with B vitamins, and if you've got vitamin B1 whizzing round your system they'll hate it.
on 7/19/2006 Melaleuca oil applied to a mosquito bite will cause it to disappear within 24 hours.
