on 11/22/2005 I used vinegar and mixed baking soda and lemon juice together on the fur. I let it dry then repeated 2 times. My dog still smells a little, especially when she is wet. I will also try the Skunk Off. I heard that vinegar was the best remedy, but it really didn't work.

on 11/22/2005 My Yorkie got skunked and she sleeps with me. I couldn't disappoint her by keeping her outside all night. I did not have tomato juice but I just so happened to have a can of tomato paste. I worked it into her fur like a thick goo and then washed it out with Suave shampoo. She was able to sleep with me that night.

on 11/22/2005 I used: 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1 cup baking soda, the juice of 2 lemons and 1 tablespoon of Palmolive dish detergent. I would recommend warming the peroxide (while in the bottle) under hot water, because this was a little cool for the dog and he shivered. I mixed well and applied with a washcloth, till he was soaked, and let sit for 5 minutes. I followed with a nice conditioning pet shampoo to replace the oils (hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice are drying) and he came through the ordeal smelling great. A little greenie for the breath odor and we were in business. Thank you for the on-time help from this site. It truly, truly worked within minutes!

on 11/22/2005 Peroxide and baking soda break down the chemicals in skunk oil. The dish washing soap is a grease cutter to remove the skunk oil. This works well. I had to use it on my dog.

on 11/22/2005 My boyfriend and I were staying at a cabin and we took our dog Drake. Well, sometime during one morning he had a bad run-in with a skunk. We just bathed him and we used lemon juice, lime juice, some Dawn, and Garnier Fructis anti-dandruff shampoo and he smells great. Give it a try!

on 11/22/2005 I followed the vet instructions of 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 pint hydrogen peroxide, 3 drops of Dawn liquid detergent, and 1 gallon of water with mineral drops in her eyes. I left it on for 7 minutes.

This got rid of the smell on her body, but I was very cautious around her eyes, so the smell still lingered on her head. I then used Massengill douche and poured it on her head and sponged it around her face. This got rid of the smell completely!

on 6/11/2007 The method that worked for my white German shepherd: I filled the tub with warm water and vinegar, drenched the dog in this mixture, and then poured vinegar directly along his back and rubbed it in. I shampooed him with dog shampoo (still a faint skunk odor). Just before I dried him, I squirted lemon juice throughout his undercoat and rubbed it in. Not only did this get rid of the bad odor, it left a rather pleasant one in its place.

on 11/22/2005 Forget any of the home remedies. If you have an animal that is outdoors and can come in contact with a skunk, go to your pet store or veterinarian and get a bottle of Skunk Off! It is fantastic. A few drops removes the skunk smell. Tomato juice is useless (you only think it takes the smell away because your own ability to smell it has been overpowered by the skunk spray as well). Peroxide is dangerous and bleaches your pets fur. Get Skunk Off! You should use nothing else for your pet. I have had to use it many times and it always works. Without any side affects or harm to the pet or yourself!

on 11/22/2005 Buy Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. You will need to buy at least two bottles. Work it into the fur and you don't even have to rinse it off. It is better than peroxide, which can alter dog's hair color. I needed three bottles for my Newfoundland.

on 11/22/2005 Our Jack Russell Terrier was sprayed by a skunk at point-blank range. First, I bathed her twice in pure tomato juice. It's expensive, but it got rid of a lot of the smell. Second, I tried 1 box baking soda plus 1 bottle peroxide plus 1/2 bottle Palmolive mixture. Much better! No smell at all! It's only been 3 hours and she's dry and happy, and on the leather couch again! :)

on 11/22/2005 I tried the Skunk-off. It only seemed to work if the dog stayed dry. I gave my dog a bath with the baking soda, peroxide, and dish soap mixture. This got rid of the smell completely. Do not use chemicals like Febreze, it is for fabrics, not your pets.

on 11/22/2005 Try using Ajax degreaser (dish soap). Wash the pet with the dish soap, then rinse with lemon juice. Wash again, this time using a pet shampoo, then rinse clean. Try not to use hydrogen peroxide, as this may discolor the pet's coat.

1 quart of hydrogen peroxide. This mixure worked well.

on 11/22/2005 Instead of using hydrogen peroxide, I took pure vinegar and made a paste with baking soda. I also put a little bit of Joy dish detergent on the animal, so that I could get some lather. I let it sit for about 5 minutes, and then drained the tub and used the spigot and a pitcher to rinse her. I then washed her twice with her regular dog shampoo. The odor is a thing of the past.

on 11/22/2005 Be VERY cautious when using wood ashes on a dog or cat that was sprayed by a skunk. Wood ash in water turns to LYE. This is not only very harsh to the skin, but extremely toxic as well. Ask any chemist, hominy, or soap maker!
