Comments on How to Get Skunk Smell out of Pet Fur

  • Nov 22, 2005
I use beer to remove the smell. It works almost instantly when applied to the affected area. Protect the dogs eyes and pour a couple of beers (may take more depending on the size of the dog) on the dog and rub into the coat. Rinse the beer out and use dog shampoo and bathe the dog as usual. You could also try mixing the beer with some vinegar, but beer has always worked well for me by itself.

My boyfriend and I were staying at a cabin and we took our dog Drake. Well, sometime during one morning he had a bad run-in with a skunk. We just bathed him and we used lemon juice, lime juice, some Dawn, and Garnier Fructis anti-dandruff shampoo and he smells great. Give it a try!

When my dog was a puppy he was sprayed three times by skunks. I called everywhere to find out how to get rid of the smell. I ended up using tomato juice and it did work, but I left it on for two days, then rinsed him off.

My black poodle was bleached brown! He got skunked; had the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/shampoo/water formula applied. Someone forget about him and left it on for 1/2 hour. When rinsed off, his black hair was bleached brown. The odor's gone though.

For an animal sprayed by a skunk, use women's douche. Buy unmixed in big bottles. Stand animal in tub and keep pouring it on him. It will not hurt him. I did it to two of my dogs. It worked in no time. It can also be used to rinse your dog after bathing.

One pound of baking soda dissolved in 1 to 2 gal of warm water. Use sponge or rags to rub into pet's fur/hair. Use complete mixture. No need to rinse right away. Can use on humans too. When my husband and dogs were sprayed, they slept inside afterwards.

I used peroxide and baking soda with a tablespoon of Dawn, and it worked great. Be careful - the peroxide lightened my dog's dark hair, to a light brownish red - oops.

Buy Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. You will need to buy at least two bottles. Work it into the fur and you don't even have to rinse it off. It is better than peroxide, which can alter dog's hair color. I needed three bottles for my Newfoundland.

Forget any of the home remedies. If you have an animal that is outdoors and can come in contact with a skunk, go to your pet store or veterinarian and get a bottle of Skunk Off! It is fantastic. A few drops removes the skunk smell. Tomato juice is useless (you only think it takes the smell away because your own ability to smell it has been overpowered by the skunk spray as well). Peroxide is dangerous and bleaches your pets fur. Get Skunk Off! You should use nothing else for your pet. I have had to use it many times and it always works. Without any side affects or harm to the pet or yourself!

We used 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of Dawn, and 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide. This mixure worked well.

I tried the Skunk-off. It only seemed to work if the dog stayed dry. I gave my dog a bath with the baking soda, peroxide, and dish soap mixture. This got rid of the smell completely. Do not use chemicals like Febreze, it is for fabrics, not your pets.

My dog had a timely meeting with a skunk to discuss territorial matters. Nothing worked as well as a product called Skunk Odor Eliminator, and I bought it at Petsmart. I put it in a sprayer and used it on my carpet and couch where my dog rubbed.

Put Vaseline on your dog's eyebrows before getting started. It will help keep water, soap and tomato juice out of his eyes.

I read in this section about putting Febreeze fabric odor eliminator on my pet's fur to remove the skunk oil. I thought I would give it a try. It worked! A lot better this way than to mix up stuff. Just remember to cover the pet's eyes while spraying.

Our dog got skunked and we tried everything - tomato juice, douche, baking soda, peroxide and Dawn, they all worked a little. The best thing I did was to use Listerine mouthwash, the mint kind, being careful not to get it into eyes. Saturate your pet, leave it on a few minutes, add shampoo, work into a lather and rinse. It completely removed the smell. I even used a diluted solution in my carpet steam cleaner.

Use mineral oil for the eyes. Then mix 1 gallon of water with 1/4 c. baking soda, 1 pint of peroxide, and 3 drops of Dawn Clear. Scrub into fur, leave on 5 to 7 minutes, rinse and let air dry. Danada Veterinary Hospital, Wheaton, Il - it works!

There is a product called "Kontain" that works better than anything on getting rid of the skunk smell on animals. This product can be purchased from Triple "L" Enterprise.

I accessed the eHow web site for help and here's what we did: She showered and washed her hair with all natural products, (Dr. Bronners bar soap and Kiss My Face shampoo and creme rinse), then I gave her the hydrogen peroxide solution (made with Seventh Generation dish liquid and Dr. Clark baking soda) in a squirt bottle and a body scrub sponge to use. I made one cup of the solution, and she kept scrubbing till she used it all up. (She clipped her hair up and out of the way, so it did not get bleached.) When she was done scrubbing and rinsing, she let her hair down and I gave her a solution of water and fresh squeezed lemon juice, with about 20 drops of lemon essential oil, to rinse with. She poured that through her hair and rubbed it into her scalp. When she got out of the shower, she rubbed her skin all over with organic olive oil. She was about five feet away when the skunk sprayed, and her hand was the closest, which still has a slight odor. After reading more of the tips, I realized that salt, which also has drawing power, would make a good "scrub" and will try it on her hand. Other than her hand, the rest of her is odor free, even her hair. But, her clothes, shoes, and purse are goners, and her car needs help. We all laughed so hard.

Sponge on white vinegar until fur is saturated. Let set for five minutes, then shampoo out.

After my dog, Rusty, took a direct spray to the head and face, I immediately doused him with dry baking powder. It absorbed a great deal of the skunk oil. Keep applying dry baking powder (the dog will keep shaking it off). There is also a dry dog shampoo on the market which has a fragrance, but I found the baking powder to work just as well. This is a quick remedy for dogs that hate water and baths.

Be VERY cautious when using wood ashes on a dog or cat that was sprayed by a skunk. Wood ash in water turns to LYE. This is not only very harsh to the skin, but extremely toxic as well. Ask any chemist, hominy, or soap maker!

My Yorkie got skunked and she sleeps with me. I couldn't disappoint her by keeping her outside all night. I did not have tomato juice but I just so happened to have a can of tomato paste. I worked it into her fur like a thick goo and then washed it out with Suave shampoo. She was able to sleep with me that night.

Wash your pet at once - before the skunking dries. Do this even if you don't have peroxide and baking soda on hand. Hose the animal, dunk him in a lake or stream ... whatever. The smell will not last as long.

Vinegar and lemon juice work. After you clean your dog, give it a treat or a chew toy.
