Wash your pet at once - before the skunking dries. Do this even if you don't have peroxide and baking soda on hand. Hose the animal, dunk him in a lake or stream ... whatever. The smell will not last as long.

Please use only natural remedies for for treating pets that have been sprayed by a skunk! Febreeze is toxic to your pets health! It is to be used on inatimate objects not a living being, read the label and you'll see. Would you spray toxic chemicals on your kids?

A breeder told me pro groomers use Woolite to de-skunk. It really works. Just wet the dog down and use Woolite like you would shampoo, then rinse. Leaves dog soft, shiny and skunk free. (Use wet washcloth on face area)

Uur dog was always chasing the skunks, the best thing I came across besides skunk shampoo, was "tangerines" just cut them in half & squeeze the affected area's, massage it in wait 10 minutes & shampoo. and it's all natural, no chemicals!

My dog gets sprayed often. All i do is wash him with Head and Shoulders. There is most often still a little odor, but it's a good first fix.

I tried the mixture of peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap three times now, which helped at first. I just wanted you to know it doesn't always completely work. I rubbed it into his fur very good, and I let it stay on for at least 30 min each time, which caused his fur to turn orange (poor guy). I could barely smell the skunk right after, but the skunk smell is coming back and getting stronger each day.

I read the tips about using peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn dish soap, but didn't want to bleach my beautiful German Shepherd, so I tried lemon juice in place of the peroxide. It is acidic enough to make the baking soda foam, and it smells nice. It worked like a charm -- my dog was odor-neutral afterwards.

Coca Cola also works. It takes about 3 bottles. Rub the cola in, rinse, shampoo and repeat 3 times.

Sponge on white vinegar until fur is saturated. Let set for five minutes, then shampoo out.

By the time you read this, it may be too late. However, after my first skunk experience, I now keep a can of tomato juice in my pantry just in case!

I can only agree with others that nothing works like peroxide and baking soda with dish soap! I think that tomato juice only makes the problem different, "tomato-a-la-skunk."

My dog got skunked and we used 2 cans of tomato juice and some vinegar and it worked perfectly. He smelled just like the stuff we used on him, so we used a citrus shampoo to cover those odors and it was like he never got skunked.

If trying the peroxide/soap/baking-soda method to de-skunk a pet's fur, be sure to have a cup and plain water ready to immediately flush the pet's eyes in case the solution should get in its eyes. Such an accident would be very painful to the pet.

I use beer to remove the smell. It works almost instantly when applied to the affected area. Protect the dogs eyes and pour a couple of beers (may take more depending on the size of the dog) on the dog and rub into the coat. Rinse the beer out and use dog shampoo and bathe the dog as usual. You could also try mixing the beer with some vinegar, but beer has always worked well for me by itself.

my poor jack russel terrier just got into a little fight with a skunk and WOW does he ever stink and so does the house...i tired everything and found that instead of peroxide lemon juice works well...you can also massage lemon juice into the fur...my poor puppy smells pretty good...but not the house:(

I used the peroxide mix and rinsed with warm water. Then on some spots, where his color is darker, I used the Skunk-Off then washed with regular people shampoo to make him smell normal. I didn't put the peroxide mix on his face though, I just wet the rag and rubbed.

We used 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of Dawn, and 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide. This mixure worked well.

Peroxide and baking soda break down the chemicals in skunk oil. The dish washing soap is a grease cutter to remove the skunk oil. This works well. I had to use it on my dog.

I combined a few things to get the horrific smell off our mini- Schnauzer. I used a big Rubber Maid container in the backyard. First I sprayed part vinegar and water, then rinsed. I then used the peroxide, soda and dish soap method. I was amazed it took the smell out! He also rubbed on a chair and the carpet right after he was sprayed! I used vinegar and water, then sprayed 3 parts Downy Softener and 1 part water. The smell is completely gone!

There is a product called "Kontain" that works better than anything on getting rid of the skunk smell on animals. This product can be purchased from Triple "L" Enterprise.

Use mineral oil for the eyes. Then mix 1 gallon of water with 1/4 c. baking soda, 1 pint of peroxide, and 3 drops of Dawn Clear. Scrub into fur, leave on 5 to 7 minutes, rinse and let air dry. Danada Veterinary Hospital, Wheaton, Il - it works!

I used vinegar and mixed baking soda and lemon juice together on the fur. I let it dry then repeated 2 times. My dog still smells a little, especially when she is wet. I will also try the Skunk Off. I heard that vinegar was the best remedy, but it really didn't work.

When my black lab was sprayed, I tried everything. After several washings, and numerous other suggestions, he still faintly smelled of the odor. I massaged some lemon juice into his fur, and the smell was gone! It's worth a try!

My dog was sprayed by a skunk earlier today and it was pretty bad. We immediately got her in the tub, soaked her fur, washed once with regular dog shampoo, covered her coat in tomato juice, let it sit for about 15 minutes, and then washed her again with dog shampoo. It is about 2 hours later right now and she smells great. It actually works! Try it!

I used peroxide and baking soda with a tablespoon of Dawn, and it worked great. Be careful - the peroxide lightened my dog's dark hair, to a light brownish red - oops.
