Return to article: How to Get Skunk Smell out of Pet Fur
on 5/22/2009 While I was in the Dollar Store, buying peroxide and baking soda to de-odor my skunk sprayed goldendoodle, an employee told me to use douche, just pour it on she said. It was cheap to buy and worked really well.
on 11/30/2008 These are all good suggestions for getting skunk odor of the pet. But when you need to get it off the furniture, the Pet jumped on after being sprayed. The solution is a product I found on this website you led room shocker.the stuff is amazing. It completely sanitized and eliminated the odor for my entire house
on 10/22/2008 2 bottles of beer and backing powder to absorbed oils from skunk, wet dog, pour a bunch of backing powder all over, rub in real good, pour the beers over , rub again real good, rinse, shampoo aas normally would, and smell is gone !@!!!
on 10/21/2008 My dog came back from running and smelled so bad I almost past out.. I tried the peroxide treatment and it worked too calm down the smell but he still has a faint oder on his head..will try to do it again to see if it helps eliminate it all..
on 9/29/2008 Dogs can go temporally blind but in most cases it does not last. I would take your dog to the vet to have it checked. It is also very painful. For skunk odor, I have found that a product called BON-CC-41 from BioWorld Products works the best. I have tried the other products that would reduce the smell, but after I used this product, it eliminated it completely. I also used it for wash my towels after giving my dog a bath and my clothes as well as shampooing my carpets. http://www.adbio.com/pet/skunked.htm
on 9/21/2008 can dogs go blind from skunk spray.my dog got sprayed five days ago and vision isnt like it was before
on 9/20/2008 The peroxide solution works well(about 1/4 cup of soda, a good squirt of dish detergent, and 1/2 cup of peroxide). I worked it into his coat full strength, and used a washcloth dipped in into the solution to work it around his eyes, ears, and muzzle, left it to soak in for a couple of minutes, and rinsed in clear water. I'm glad I have Jack Russels, though, and not English Sheep Dogs!
on 9/5/2008 Quick question, my dog got sprayed 4 days ago, we as I have now come to see, mistakenly used tomato juice, then next day used a solution from the vet, trouble is it is still seeping out of his big ears (Beagle), tomorrow AM we are going to try peroxide treatment. My main question I guess is that when he gets wet on the face (we've been giving daily baths) is when it really smells, will this ever go away? Saw a comment before from a breeder saying if the peroxide dose aint done in 12 hours it will never come out....PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks.
on 8/25/2008 My Mom's dog was skunked early this morning. After I wash with dish detergent, I mixed up the solution of 3% peroxide, baking soda and dish detergent. I lathered him up good, being careful of his eyes, rinsed well and then followed with a good dog shampoo. He seems to be smelling like fresh apples now, which was the scent of the last dog shampoo I used. From now on, I'll always have the 3% proxide handy. Most Vets do recommend using that solution.
on 7/29/2008 I am a groomer. Tomato juice does not work! It is just a big mess and may turn your pet different colors. The best thing to do is the peroxide recipe. You must put it on straight and let it sit. It has to be done in the first 12 hrs or you will never get it out. You may want to use a doggy conditioner afterward, as the peroxide will dry out the skin and coat. Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor remover also works for people, pets, clothes, etc (available at PetSmart).
on 7/22/2008 I walked my dogs earlier and let them off the leash to run around..They came back with skunk "perfume" and it almost knocked me out of my shoes..I washed them each 3 times with Dawn dish soap, then sponged them down with tomato juice..There was still some smell left between the eyes..I tried the 1/4 peroxide 3%, 1/2 cup baking soda and 2 tablespoons of arm&hammer washing detergent. On one dog the smell is completly gone and the other still has a faint odor between the eyes, but I hope that will be gone also once she her fur has dried. Tomorrow I will wash them again with oatmeal shampoo because I'm sure the detergent dried their skin out pretty bad..Besides being a little mad at me for all that water on them, they seem 2 enjoy that the smell is gone..Their not rubbing their noses anymore on the ground...
on 7/15/2008 Okay I tried the peroxcide, baking soda, and dish right away on my dog. I repeated this twice. Seemed to work okay. Most of the smell was gone, with the expection of his face. Was bearable...but as the days went bye smell got worse. Tried the vinager douche and baby shampoo lst night...seemed to work well until the morning. Smell is back!!! Bought a product called Tecnu today and will try that tonight. Will let you know how it works!
on 7/14/2008 Why do I need tomato juice, a douche, and Kiss My Face shampoo and rinse creme, when the recipie never calls for them? And where does one get "commercial skunk odor remover"? Could the recipie suggest a few brand names, or where to find such things? It would be nice not to have to try to find suggested products in the comments. Complete recipie/instructions would be apprecited!
on 3/9/2008 There is a product called Odorxit concentrate available on the net that actually removes all the skunk odor. I have used it on me and my dog and my clothes and it actually worked. I bathed my dog with pet shampoo and after rinsing I re-wetted him with this stuff mixed 1 part to 30 parts of water like the instructions said. The odor was gone except for between his eyes. I called the company and the guy said to re-wash the area that still smelled and re-apply the solution. I did it the smell was gone. I washed my cloths in regular detergent with 2 caps of the Odorxit and let them soak after the first wash cycle like the instructions said to do and after they finished washing and drying, the skunk smell was gone. After all this, I showered with my normal soap and wiped myself with the same mixture I used on the dog and you guessed it, it worked on me too. Thank god my neighb
