Comments on How to Shake Hands

1st off, if you're going to shake someone's hand, DON'T use you're foot. This is seen as an insult in some places. Also make sure your hand is at the end of your arm when you extend it, and if you are carrying a potato or hamster, first put that down. Only if you know the person well should you attempt to sellotape your hands together.

As a woman, I like firm handshakes with other women and men. I dont like when I shake a woman's hand and it feels like a limp fish. I also dont like when a man puts his hand out to shake mine. I think it is proper and courteous for a man to wait for a woman and for a woman to shake hands with some firmness.

My friends father only has his left arm. I am not sure if I should shake with the left or right. Typically when he extends his hand it is raised and his palm is facing down. I then extend my right hand with the palm facing up and he then will bring his hand down and gasp my hand. Your thoughts would be appreicated.

Tip: If you're in the bathroom before you expect to meet someone, make sure your right hand is extra dry. Shaking hands with the left is pretty rare so it's less important to make that one bone dry. Regarding shaking hands with women: It's true that in social situations, men should not initiate handshakes with women (although it's not a huge deal if you do, in my opinion). However, that is not the case in business. Businesswomen expect to be treated equally (as they should), and dainty customs about women are out of place in that circumstance. So go ahead and initiate a handshake there.

A slight tilt of the head, accompanied by a smile and sincere eye contact will add to your aura of confidence.

Keep your hand straight and do not cup it. Make it a firm shake.

A gentleman should alway stand when shaking hands. If you are seated and someone approaches you, stand up to shake hands with them. On the other hand, a seated lady should not stand when approached by a gentleman. A young woman should stand when approached by an older woman or a woman in authority.
