I like the tips about Nature's Miracle, the fluorescent black light, and rubbing alcohol.
What I have found prevents the problem from soaking into the carpet is purchasing plastic runners. I purchased a length of clear thick plastic carpet runners with pointy nubs to hold them in place from Orchard Hardware and Garden. I bought an excessive length and cut it up so the runner was much larger than the litterbox itself. My cat has his "accidents" in predictable places (i.e. around the litterbox despite my purchasing a box with high sides - BoodaBox) so his accidents land on plastic runner instead of the carpet. Much easier to clean. When he goes outside the box, I simply use a paper towel to pick up solid waste before sponging the rest up and I use papertowels and/or newspaper to sop up liquid waste before sponging it up. Then, when I wash and change the litterbox, I throw the runners in the washing machine with laundry detergent and bleach. Works wonders!

I used Body Shop's "No doubt" perfume on the carpet (after cleaning the stain with standard carpet cleaner) - the smell was gone, and my cat avoided the area for few weeks. So, just re-apply it every forthnight or so, and you'll be quite safe. Works against scratching the furniture as well!

My cat urinated on my bathroom mat and so I washed it in the washing machine and then placed it in the dryer. I sprayed the mat with perfume. It didn't work. He urinated there again and so I washed the mat again. The mat had an aweful smell and so I threw it away. I will now follow the above tips that everyone has left for viewers like myself. Thanks!

I know this may sound sick but it really works. We have a male cat that liked to spray a bush outside of our front door, someone told us to have my husband urinate on it and they will not do it anymore. The cat has not been back for 2 months now!!

After trying practically every thing, several times, (from natural's miracle (gallonS), stanley steemer, oziom spray), today i just completed my task!!! i am soo excited i had to share the wealth with you (cause just last night i was going to rip up the carpet and desperately cut out the padding perimeters, figuring it had to be in the padding - cause i could not get the smell out)BUT with my lil' old bissel cleaning machine and ODOR BAN, my house has never smelled so fresh!!! i kid you not. i put the tube in the bottle of OB and the other to the faucet and cranked up the water heater a little and the cat piss is gone!!!!! the cats have 1 more life.....lol. i found odor ban at sam's wholesale club, but i'm sure it can be found right here on the internet! DO IT>

I agree that the product called "Nature's Miracle" is a miracle. It sometimes takes 1 or 2 applications, but I swear by the product. I also soak my litter pans in it when I empty all the litter from them. Makes a great airfreshener, too!

Use a wet/dry vac! Soak area w/solution of water and small amount of laundry detergent, then vacuum up. Rinse w/water and vac up again. Repeat if needed. Apply Nature's Miracle. If odor is there 2 weeks later, repeat process. Don't get rid of the cat!

Enzyme cleaners sold at a pet store work great - but make sure you cover the carpet with plastic for 48 hours to keep the carpet wet. It takes that long for the enzymes to do their job. It will smell until you remove the plastic and the carpet dries.

A fluorescent black light ($15-30) in a dark room will show all urine spots as very bright yellow areas. Once you know where the areas are, use Nature's Miracle on them to kill the smell. This worked GREAT when our 20-year-old cat had bladder infections.

Use a solution of Non Bio washing powder, and wash into the carpet. The key to removal is get out as much moisture as possible after cleaning. This takes away the offensive odour.

My cat has been hitting the same spot for a while. I tried everything out there and found Oxi Clean was the only product that removed the stains.

on 11/22/2005 First I clean up the urine stain with a strong carpet cleaner. Then I cover the stain with white vinegar. It neutralizes the odor.

on 11/22/2005 I had no luck with rubbing alcohol. The smell is less noticeable, but the cat has been back.
