Comments on How to Remove Cat Urine From Carpet

  • damonmcspadden Jun 18, 2009
I trained my cats to go to the potty on the toilet and when they were on the last stage, the littler of the two decided to have a pissfest in my living room. I found a simple method to remove the cat pee. Get: An iron that steams A bucket of cold soapy water (don't use hot the steam makes it hotter) A towel Soak the towel and wring it out so its damp. Place it over the area to be treated. Steam the crap out of it. Wring it out and repeat You have to give the iron time to heat back up so it can be a little time consuming, but I shoved my nose in the spot and checked it with a black light and its gone.

Mix a large bottle of rubbing alcohol with a bit of water - put into a watering can and sprinkle over the urine spot (do a test patch first to be sure your carpet won't discolor - mine did not on two different carpets). Douse the spot well so the carpet pad underneath is soaked as well. Let dry overnight and do not let the cat near this area until completely dry. Spot clean, once dry, with handheld carpet cleaning machine. The rubbing alcohol evaporates with the urine. Nature's Miracle is primarily made up of Isopropyl Alcohol - same thing. The rubbing alcohol does smell strong at first, but not after it's dry. This is a very cheap way to fix the problem.

The only true way to make sure your clothes are not covered in cat hair and smell like cat pee is to get rid of the cat(s) and replace the damaged items. (Understand the the "cat lover" in your house may have to go too...)

I've now tried almost everything and have found one thing that works, but is taking drastic measures. 1. Rip the carpet and pad back. 2. Pour straight bleach on the floor. 3. Put a very small amount of dish detergent on a scrub brush and brush the bleached floor. 4. Let sit for about 5 minutes. 5. Clean excess bleach mixture off floor with old towels. Use a bleach, water, Dawn mixture and scrub the bottom and top of the carpet and let dry. Flip carpet and padding back into it's original spot. If it starts to smell again, cut the padding out where it's stained and repeat the bleaching steps above. And if it still starts to smell again, cut the carpet out and replace with new carpet.

I have tried Oxi Clean on pet stains and it did not work. I have also used Odo Ban, Kids N Pets, Baking Soda, Borax, Bathroom Cleaner(Scrubbing Bubbles), Windex, Carpet cleaner for steam cleaners for pet odors. I still haven't found anything yet that works.

What do you do if your cats are peeing in the same corner, and now the drywall is stinky? I already ripped up one peice of carpet at the stair landing, and am afraid to replace for fear they will pee on it again, after removing that, they wnt to the second landing of the stairs, and started peeing there. I don't know who is doing it, or if they all are. Tjought about setting up my cam corder to catch the criminal in the act!

One day I had a little gathering at my house. I noticed that Mittens (That's my cutesie wootsie kitty cat) had urinated on my new eggshell white/ creme de uevos carpet! I was rather disturbed with what Mittens had done. I grabbed him up and started to rub his nose in it. Before I even lifted him up, I noticed that it was actually a leak in the ceiling that caused the spot! I laughed so hard I peed my pants. Needless to say, I left quite a spot on the carpet. One guest at the party (Jimmy) immediately rubbed my nose in it and beat me with a newspaper. Talk about instant karma!

Cat accidents-I have 8 yr old cat who has accidents for years, but only recent visit to vet dx a urinary infect.Once that was cleared up with antibiotics and CD cat food he was still urinating out of the box. With the help of tranquilizers, phermone difuser and cat attract, I put him in a small bedroom [not a cold sterile bathroom]. It took about 3 weeks but after all these years he's become good boy. Another thing I discovered, if the cat thinks the litter is huring his tush, I put out an empty box, elevate at a slant with a couple of shims on the bottom, and he'll pee in that.

Do NOT rub your cat's nose in the pee stain. PLEASE do not rub your cat's nose in pepper!! The cat doesn't understand this and it feels like an attack from you. This cure is a wive's tale and cruel to the animal and comments here should really be about cleaning anyway and not cat behavior. Cats love to be neat. These issues are usually brought on by some issue with the litter box or litter, some kind of stress or a health issue. The only way to solve these problems is to be a good and loving detective.

One more thing. You will never completely rid a carpet of cat urine. Remember, it seeps down into the mat underneath. If you don't believe me, pick up the carpet and smell the mat!

Melissa: I noticed you didn't mention Nature's Miracle. It's the only thing that works, unless you can figure out and purchased the enzymes that remove the stain and odor. It's pricy, about $22 per gallon at PetsMart or Petco, but definitely worth it. The other solution is concrete floors - painted or stained and sealed. Then they are impervious. Also, great if you have allergies.

I, too, am looking for solutions to cats peeing on stove. I don't have a solution, but I thought I'd offer some insight since I'm going through the same thing. I think I've settled on the X-Mat, though. First, make sure your cat has no medical problem. Barring that, consider this: You didn't say how many cats you have. If you have multiple cats, Maxwell may be peeing outside the litter box because he doesn't want other cats in it or it may be too full. He may also be peeing because of stress or to mark territory. I have several cats. They have all peed in the tub or elsewhere at some time because of stress. Strangely enough, when one has become constipated because of stress or other reason, he will use the bathtub instead of the litter box when he is finally ready. We have surmised that cats sense sickness in other cats and may perceive the (excuse the crudeness but there's no other way to say it) large size and texture of his post-constipation feces to be a sign of sickness. Since he doesn't want to telegraph sickness, he uses the bathtub instead until his bowel movements are back to normal. I have a cat who pees on the stove because one of my other cats spends every waking hour contemplating ways to annoy her by usurping her cat bed, her personal hiding places and her place on the stove where I she eats (reason she eats on stove? I have dogs, too, who will eat her food if it's on the floor.) It is also a myth that you cannot move litter boxes. Cats have a highly developed sense of smell and will find and use a litter box anywhere. They might not like it at first, but they'll get used to it. Hope this helps. Glad to know there's someone else with this problem!
