As women get older, their shoulders become more narrow thus the need for some padding for a balanced look. The most important thing is DO NOT purchase things that don't fit in the shoulders. Jacket shoulders that hang over the shoulders make you look heavier. I am a tailor and deal with this situation quite a bit. To get a jacket to button, often the shoulders need to be taken in. It always pays to know someone that sews. 5*

Great article. I'm 5'10" and have got heavier over the years but find that boot cut pants give me a much better look that stright leg pants. I still wear shoulder pads, just not the big ones of the 80's & 90's; tiny ones that give a little definition to the shoulder and good posture makes a big difference to the overall look. Thanks.

Shoulder pads are still worn, just not as pronounced as they used to be. They make your shoulders look straighter. I enjoyed reading this. Good info.

Bigger, fuller hair styles can also help even out the wide hip issue especially if you have a smaller face/head. However, wearing your hair higher up (off the shoulders) might compliment your shoulders, neck, face, upper back, and may also make you appear taller. Avoid pulling your hair back super tight. Also, avoid turtle necks unless you have perky breasts. Turtle necks make breasts look like they are in your mid section rather than higher up.

Who wears shoulder pads these days? Please ladies, do yourself a favor and throw them out, a woman with shoulder pads is exactly that, a woman with shoulder pads, and everyone can see them. They never sit right and the shape shows through the fabric. And unless you are the one sewing them in the garment, steer clear. A woman is not shaped like a box nor are her shoulders and hips supposed to be the same width, we're not robots. Baggy clothes bring you down, meaning very grounded, and that is not a good look for someone who is overweight or short. Wear what flatters your best features and forget about the rest, everything will come together once you concentrate on making the good parts look phenomenal. Also, comfortable fitting pants or jeans with darts in the front, will only make you look big and frumpy. Next time you are shopping for pants, hold them up in front of you, up high so you can get a good look at the shape of them. What you see is what you get, and if it doesn't look like a flattering form (i.e: cone shaped legs, our legs are not cone shaped) don't get them! Always look at the garment before trying it on, and see if it even has a human form.

Avoid trendy low-rider jeans if you have a big waist. The Gap has plenty of fabulous fitting jeans with a higher waist. Put a swing in your strut, stand up straight and throw your shoulders back. You'll instantaneously look like you've lost ten pounds.

If you are going to wear high heels, make sure they are sleek, narrow heels. Big chunky heels make your legs look fatter and heavier.
