Comments on How to Get Rid of Fleas

  • Jun 30, 2006
I woke up one morning to my kitty lying on the floor in diarrhea, drool, and seizures. I was told, by the vet that the over-the-counter flea preparation my husband had put on her the day before was the poison that caused her extreme illness and could have killed her. The cost of putting our cat on IV fluids (to flush the poison out of her) as well as transferring her to the emergency clinic after hours was quite high. We do not use any over-the-counter flea preparations on any of our pets anymore! If I see someone considering the cheaper flea alternatives in any store, I warn them of the consequences their pet could face.

Sprinkle baking soda all around on carpet and around door facings. This cuts down on flea entry.

My tip is a little strange, but I swear by it. Use a good flea shampoo on your pet. Here is the strange part; spray your carpet and floors with Pine-Sol. Half water, half Pine-Sol mixture. Spray until the carpet is moist. Do this every day or so for about a week, also remember where you are getting the fleas from. Outside, plant some penny royal, or get a good insecticide to treat the yard. If all else fails, try a flea bomb, they really work.

I got home after a three day journey, and my house was infested with fleas. I tried spraying some stuff from Home Depot, and then tried Borax, and they were still kicking. Someone told me about Siphotrol. I sprayed it around and within a couple of hours, the fleas were totally gone. It's been 3 days now, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed; I have seen no fleas.

We got a beautiful 7 week old kitten today. Tonight I noticed she has fleas. In the past I've seen fleas, but these were the biggest I've ever seen. I didn't know they got so big! I bathed her in lemon Joy (store was out of lemon Dawn) and about 50 fleas surfaced. I picked them off and set them in water (just in case they went after her again.) I wrapped her in a towel while she was still covered in soap for 5 minutes and when I took the towel off it was covered in fleas. My husband took the towel, put it in a plastic bag and threw it outside in the trash. Then, when I rinsed her in the sink, more dead fleas were floating in there! I couldn't believe how infested this tiny little animal was. I was so tickled with the results of the dish soap - I was afraid to use any store-bought products on the tiny thing. She already seems much happier. I may try one more bath tomorrow to make sure I got them all.

Even though puppies might be a bit young for flea spray, flea vaccination or flea pills, you can still use flea shampoo, flea combs and common sense. And keep your clean and healthy pet away from the flea prone neighbor's dog!

We had 3 dogs and had to let them go due to moving. The dogs were with us in the new house for 2 weeks before finding them homes. After they left, within days we had fleas everywhere in the house! Researching on the Internet I found this: Small plate Dish Soap Lamp The fleas jump into the plate and don't jump out. Remember, fleas are attracted to the heat. I bought a desk lamp that I could bend as far down to the water as I felt safe. I caught fleas, and any other bug, that happened to like heat. The candle I would be a little fearful of, and it might burn itself out too soon. My fleas were gone within a 2 week period and I could keep the lamps on day and night without worry.

This is 100% safe, non-toxic to children, animals and our waters. I've been doing this for 8 years with my Rottweiler, she loves it, it also leaves her smelling wonderful for weeks, her coat beautiful, shiny and unbelievably soft! Its the original Dawn dish soap! It kills fleas instantly. Yes they can swim, but not if they are dead! I have also taken my dog's bedding and machine washed it killing fleas every time. Just add a squirt of Dawn to the load, not too much or else you will have suds of fun! I've found that it also actually repels them for up to a month, it doesn't dry the dog's skin out, but moisturizes it! My dog really looks forward to her baths, so I usually wash and rinse twice. The most important thing to remember is to start with their neck, right behind their ears and work your way back, the fleas literally jump off! I've also used a similar method for my cats! I guarantee if you try it once you'll never use any thing else again, PS. Dawn is anti-bacteria, too.

Thanks to a combination of tips from this site, my apartment is 100% flea-free! Thanks everyone! We adopted a new kitten to join our other indoor cat and little did we know, she came to us covered in fleas and flea eggs. We covered our carpets in 20 Team Mule Borax and swept it in with a broom - it took 1.5 boxes to cover a 900 ft. apartment. Then we got both the cats a dose of Advantage. The fleas were literally falling off the cats after we put this on. And neither one reacted badly to it. After a few days, we vacuumed up the Borax, and we haven't seen a flea since.

While Diatomaceous earth does work for fleas, please be aware that it is designed for outdoor use. It can cause lung problems, so please be careful and use a mask when spraying it. They do not recommend that you use it indoors.

My cats and dog were heavily infested with fleas. I rubbed a few drops of lavender oil into their fur, then put a drop of oil in every corner of every room in my house. Within a few hours, there was not a flea to be found, as well as no ants, flies, or spiders. It's been two years, and I haven't had a single flea! I have not re-applied to the animals, but once a month I re-apply the drop in all corners.

We had fleas 8 years ago. Here is a free cure for fleas: Gather the following items: One cake dish Some water Liquid soap One candle Steps: Just before bedtime, fill the cake dish with water 3/4 of the way and place it in the infested area. Place 2-3 good squirts of liquid soap in the water and mix it. Place the candle in the middle of the soapy water. It should be short enough that if the candle were to fall over, the water will put out the candle. Finally, turn out the lights. Fleas will jump for the candle, landing in the water, and the soap will not allow them to get back out. The next day, my containers looked as if someone had poured a lot of pepper into the water. By the fourth night, there were no more fleas.

I have wrapped clear, masking tape around my hand (sticky side facing outward) and patted the fleas off my dog. The fleas get pressed onto the stick of the tape with little effort, and they can't jump off. This works best when the dogs hair is really short. I find this is a great technique to get rid of the fleas between washes, and my dog doesn't mind one bit. I have got about 50 fleas off the dog before after he brought them in from outside.

I have a 6 week old kitten and I recently found out she was covered with flea dirt and had a few fleas. I totally agree that Advantage is the best solution as it kills fleas in the surrounding areas as well.

Remember that fleas only want to get on the pet long enough for a blood meal and then get off. After that, they go to a place where life is comfortable, indoors where the temp is just right. So unless you are using a quality product, you have fleas.

In addition to using carpet flea powders, you can put it or an over the counter pet spray into a carpet cleaner (Bissell, Hoover). Use it with the recommended carpet detergent. Depending upon how your cleaner works, go slowly over your carpet to get a deep clean. It works better than foggers. I would also suggest that you go over your carpets the next day with just the regular detergent. You would be amazed at how many fleas this gets up.
