I just have a question. I found one medium sized louse in my hair on Thurs. I had a friend go through my hair on Sat. and she only found 1 nit in my hair. I treated my hair on Thurs. What are the chances that there's anything else in my hair? Thank you.

In fact, blow drying is probably the only one of these tips that's backed up by research. It isn't the heat that kills them, but the air flow that dries them out and kills both nits and eggs. Go Google "lice blow dry" and you should find the article that explains how university researchers discovered this treatment.

Tea tree oil is a great prevention tool. Just add 5 drops into your shampoo and wash daily as usual. You can buy tea tree oil at any health food store or vitamin, minerals store for less than ten dollars a bottle.

Most of the advice on here is great. A few things need to be refined. Head lice do not go onto eyelashes or eyebrows. Pubic lice do but that is a different species of lice and is treated differently. Olive oil or mayonnaise must be on the head with a shower cap for 8 hours to be effective. This is a messy time consuming process. A non-toxic enzyme would work best. Blow drying hair does not kill lice or eggs (nits). Nothing kills nits. They must be manually removed.

lysterine works great. pour it on your head, rub it in, let it sit for as long as possible, then wash out and condition very well, then go through with a lice comb. do this every other day for the first week and then once a week for a month to be sure it's gone. I've also heard that windex works but I'm not convinced its healthy...

lysterine works wonders, just make sure to condition well after! windex works as well, but it can be harsh to your hair, so thats up to you.

The key to nit picking is working on very small sections of the hair and very good lighting, sunlight is the best. The nits kind of sparkle in the sun. Do it daily for 3 days then check once a week to be sure.

As a hairstylist,I tell my customers to use any silicone based hair gloss, such as Paul Mitchell Gloss drops, or Biosilk. Another good one to use is Paul Mitchell Quick Slip. It is a creamy, and very slippery conditioning treatment for the hair that is a leave in. These make the nits slide out, but also condition the hair after the nasty shampoo. Shampoo out with a good moisture shampoo, maybe twice to get the silicone out, then follow up with a deep moisture treatment. Your scalp and hair will need it.

I have thick curly hair, so in high school I came in contact with lice alot. One way I have used that was effective in killing the lice and nits was to use conditioner. No, It does not kill them but when you are taking a shower, put conditioner on your hair while you wash the rest of your body or so on. Then run a metal nit comb through your hair. The conditioner causes them to become loose. I do this every time I shower, even to this day. But you have to be thorough and not just go over it once but many times. If you do this you should not have any lice if you shower every day while doing this.

I was infected with headlice while volunteering at a local elementary school. Being an adult, I was too embarrassed asking someone to help me comb through my thick, long hair fors hours on end. After trying all recommended treatments with NO success (including Ovide and other prescriptions), I finally bought Nutrogena TGEL Extra Strength with Coal Tar Extract. I've been washing my hair twice a day and leaving the shampoo on for 5-10 minutes. The bugs are gone! No more itching or tickling, no more nits. This is the easiest, least messy treatment I have found.

My daughters both had nits but no visible live lice. The school nurse suggested that we mix equal parts of vegetable or olive oil and white vinegar, wrap the head with a plastic bag, and let it sit for at least an hour, and comb through with a nit comb. After that, we shampooed and rinsed. The vinegar loosens the glue which lets the nits slide free, and the oil suffocates the live lice. We did this once and had no further problems, plus the vinegar and oil are mild and chemical free!

Denorex Extra strength shampoo may kill lice but it contains coal tar a Known human carcinogen. A University of California site suggests shampoos containing olive oil or coconut oil as a possible altrernative to the lice shampoos. Shampoo at least every other day.

i recently had to deal with head lice and it was hard to get rid of. i found a solution for lice. camphophenique, found in the cold sore area, works. apply this to the scalp, this stuff smells very strong and bad, (saturate the entire head),then wait about 20-30 minutes and comb the hair in small sections with a nit comb.(like you would with the RID medicated shampoo.) this will remove the bugs and eggs. after wards wash the hair with regular shampoo several times, the hair will be extremely oily. the ingredients in the camphophenique kills live lice on contact and strips it from your hair. the hair will smell awful for a few daysw but the lice will be gone. trust me this worked for my neice and nephew, and it will work for you if done properly
