on 12/16/2007 Is there any evidence in randomised trials for these remedies? I know that Zinc does not improve or speed recovery for viral infections. High potency multivitamins do not improve immune function, unless lacking, which is very rare in developed countries. There is conflicting evidence for echinacea.

on 8/8/2006 - Put about 3 tablespoons of clover honey in a bowl.
- Microwave for about 20 seconds, or until the honey melts (it will be hot, so watch out).
- Add about 2 or 3 tablespoons of lemonade.
- Stir it and sip slowly or eat with a spoon.

on 8/8/2006 Buy some licorice root at your local health food store and steep it in boiling water for a few minutes. Sip the tea slowly. It really takes away the pain! Also, there are many sore throat tea offerings that are pre -mixed. Many include licorice root, raspberry leaves, echinacea. They have been a great help to our family.

on 8/8/2006 Drinks that are too cold will make even a good throat get a cold, but drinking too hot drinks is also not good, because it creates the proper environment for bacteria and other microbes to grow and stay in an already infected area. Prefer room temperature for water and slightly warm milk or tea. If you want your honey to melt better in the beverage, you can put it in while the beverage is hot, but wait until the temperature has dropped to drink it.

on 6/30/2006 If your sore throat is scratchy and itchy, rather than inflamed, raw, and swollen, try Benadryl. An intense throat pain with rawness and swelling is usually bacteria-related and you should see your doctor. However, if your throat is a nuisance with the itchiness and mild swelling, it is most likely related to nasal drip that you may not even be aware you have. My nose never gets stuffy or runny, but it does drip down the back of my throat while I sleep if I have a cold. Take Benadryl and that will take care of it.

on 3/23/2006 To relieve throat pain, five drops of oregano mixed with water works effectively. The taste is not the best, but the effect is definitely worth it. I have also discovered, from a few days of incessant coughing and throat pains, that the best way to relieve a sore throat is to keep in a warm area with chamomile tea (with lemons and honey or just a full spoonful of honey) and try calming yourself with something such as reading or meditation, and avoid talking overmuch.

on 1/16/2006 Do not eat sugar. White sugar is the worst. Chemically, it's as refined a substance as pure heroin. Because it's so unnaturally concentrated, it's basically poison. It throws off your body's Ph balance, making it go acidic, which in turn suppresses your immune system. A macrobiotic friend told me this once and my son and I have never been sick since. When I do lack willpower and eat sweets (to excess; a little is OK), I can count on getting a sore throat within hours. That's when you take a spoonful of baking soda in a glass of water to restore alkalinity to your system. Assuming you stay away from additional sugar, this will make your sore throat go away. I asked my doctor if she knew of this connection, and she just laughed. They're too busy suppressing symptoms (like yanking tonsils) to ever think about causes.

on 11/22/2005 My parents always put Vick's VapoRub on my throat and then would pin a long sock or cloth around my throat. It would keep the vapors in and my throat warm. I tried it this afternoon and it worked wonders.

on 11/22/2005 Whenever you feel a sore throat coming, drink a glass or two of orange juice as soon as possible. Then, about an hour before going to bed, have another. This has worked every time for me, as well as my friends. Try it out! I know it sounds very simple, but it truly makes a difference.

on 11/22/2005 I drink a cup of ginger tea. Take about an inch of ginger and either crush it or cut it up and add it to a pot of almost boiling water and let it simmer for a few minutes, then drink. It relieves a sore throat, stuffy nose and more.
