Return to article: How to Treat Hives Naturally
on 9/14/2008 I have had hives from allergic reactions to tylenol and foods. Found a home remedy that works great in The Natural Healing Book. Drink 1/4 tsp. baking soda in water 3 times 15 minutes apart. You can also apply a paste of baking soda with water on the affected skin. My husband ran to pharmacy to get me some benedryl, and by the time he got back the baking soda had stopped the severe itching and the swelling and redness was greatly reduced.
on 8/6/2008 I love etherbunny's solution. Hives are a serious issue. Take benadryl. Or take Zyrtec to prevent hives!

on 10/19/2007 I have had Hives from head to toe for 5 weeks now.Thankfuly they are not all over at the same time.I have been on different meds and nothing has helped. I havent done anything different to cause this. I broke out from my ribs to the top of my head,so red and burning, knots over every inch including my mouth, my blood pressure went up to 173/110, this has been a very trying time. Please take hives seriously. I am waiting on lab results.
on 5/27/2007 Whoever added the comment on 8.8.2006, saved my life! I have been in agony with hives for two days from a reaction to amoxicillin. The tip about using a hair dryer is something I would never have dreamed of but helped with the itching immensely. The hives are finally subsiding. I am grateful to the person who took the time to post that advice.
on 4/4/2007 Be careful with the hairdryer solution. I've been doing this for years actually (so funny to see others do it, too!) and I have a few dark/blackish patches on my skin where I've sort of burnt the skin from enjoying the heat for too long. When I let up for weeks, it starts to go away (so I know it's not cancer - gasp!) but when I itch, this really does work. As does a very hot shower or running water over my arms/hands when I get hives.
on 9/7/2006 Gently and slowly sliding an ice cube over the wheals reduces the heat and swelling, reducing blood carrying histamines to the skin to react. This is my first full-body outbreak, and when you feel like you're on fire, this gives relief.
on 8/8/2006 Instead of bathing in it, I mix it with a cup of water until it is a gooey, thick substance and put it on my hives. I find that this works much better than diluting it and bathing in it.
on 8/8/2006 I actually saw this remedy on a website, but for the life of me I can't seem to remember the address. Anyways, they suggested using the heat from a blow dryer on the itchy areas. I don't know if I would use it on my face though, but it worked extremely well on my arms and legs. I had really bad hives from a medication I was taking for a sinus infection, and I broke out everywhere including blisters on my face. You set it on the highest heat level, blow it onto the affected area until you feel the burn/pain then remove, repeat a couple of times and your itch will be gone for at least a couple of hours. Basically you have to have the pain for the itch to go away, according to the website it is physically impossible to have pain and itch at the same time. The good thing is the pain only last a couple of seconds and the itch is gone for a couple of hours.
on 6/30/2006 Lye soap works for hives. It helps in the shower and dries the skin naturally. Also, it works great in relieving poison ivy and flea bites, plus many others.
on 6/30/2006 If you've been tanning a lot and you break out in hives, then the sunlight might be the cause, especially if you have sensitive skin.
on 2/6/2006 I have been plagued by hives for most of my adult life. I have tried everything. Although it sounds strange, the best thing that I have found to soothe the itch of hives is Milk Of Magnesia. Just spread it on the same way you would Calamine lotion. It works like a charm, trust me.
on 11/22/2005 When my daughter breaks out in hives, I do three things. I give her an oatmeal bath. Then I rub calamine lotion on her, and finally I give her a dose of an anti-histamine. Usually within an hour or so her hives are gone.
