Use good facial moisturizer too, one that Hydrates, so that your face won't dried up/irritates every time you shave/trim

If you don't want to shave your head bald, which produces a much better face for a goatee, you can also grow very thick and long sideburns. These make any goatee look like it belongs. And the ladies will love to play with your sideburns, trust me. ;)

I like using a straight edge shaper that resembles the leather-strap-sharpened blades of yesteryear barber shops. These now feature removable razors that are extremely sharp, so be careful. These are normally available at beauty supply stores. Shapers enable you to have complete control over the blade, as opposed to guessing the gauge of the average horizontal razor. When using these, use a shaving lotion, as opposed to a foaming shaving cream, so that you can see very clearly which hairs go or stay. Also, shape up the area on the bottom of the mustache, along the upper lip. This gives a real clean look.

Use beard trimmers to trim your goatee or Van Dyke. Find a length setting on the trimmer head that you like and always trim it with that setting. Trim every time you shave. This minimizes straggly hairs, maintains a full, even length and effectively combs it too. Oh, and keep it short (unless you're a biker).

One user shares that a goatee together with a mustache is called a Van Dyke. It is also known as a French Beard.

First, do 50 push-ups and 100 squats before you shave. A good sweat will do a better job than just a hot face rag. Shave your cheeks and neck and when you get to your chin, take something straight and score two lines on your face on both sides of you goatee. Shave up to that point and stop. Wipe with hot water and take off any stray hair. Rinse and keep that goatee looking sweet.

Shampoo your goatee every time you wash your hair. Use conditoner too.

Though goatees are no longer truly fashion forward, if you MUST have one, keep it trimmed very short. Long and/or bushy goatees are a health hazard and give the appearance of a slightly lower station.

If your sporting stylish facial hair, you'll want to know the proper terms in educated company. A goatee is the hair trimmed along the chin and below the mouth. A Vandyke is the combination of a goatee and a mustache.

Your whiskers may start to look scruffy quicker than you might think. I trim almost weekly just to maintain a clean look. Remember too that some whiskers grow quicker than others. Wait to judge your goatee until your slow-pokes catch up enough that when you trim, all of your whiskers are now the same length - it gives an honest depiction of the fullness of your goatee. Also, I find that a decent pair of hair-trimmers work way better than any beard-trimming kit.

Pick up an electric beard/mustache trimmer. Start long, and work your way down to the smaller extensions to find the length you like. Trim it every week, or else you'll end up looking like a serial killer instead of a stud.

Goatees can be a very masculine look for many men. However, if you are among those that have sparce or uneven facial hair, goatees, beards and mustaches are not your best bet. Instead of adding manly mystique, it can make you look sloppy and unkept.

When shaving the edges of your goatee, smile and follow the smile lines. Any beard outside your smile lines may look scruffy.
