on 8/20/2008 just what i was afraid of, that is, boiling my pyrex dish on top of a stove!! it sounded dangerous to me,
and now i know, and how do we know if the pyrex dish
is already compromised and would explode on a hot burner anyway?
i will just stick to using my trustie raiser blade
method, gently of course, as it really gets the thick stuff off fast, and
i will definetly try hot water and baking soda next time for sure, but not on the stove!!

on 5/9/2008 WOW! I have used this technique hundreds of times over 15 years as well as my mom, sisters, aunts and numerous friends and NEVER have had anything remotely close to this happening!! Maybe the integrity of your dish was already compromised?? Sorry this didn't work out for you!

on 5/8/2008 DON'T DO THIS UNLESS YOU ENJOY CLEANING UP SHARDS OF GLASS FROM MOST OF YOUR KITCHEN!!! My Pyrex baking dish exploded before the water began to boil! So, on top of the mess that took about 1.5 hours to clean-up, my beautiful new gas stove no longer works.Luckily, I was wearing glasses and long sleeves and slacks and only suffered a couple of splinters in the clean-up. I did have to throw away a couple of side-dishes that were sitting uncovered on the counter. What a waste, it would have been much cheaper to just throw them away and buy new, the cost of the food alone would have made it more cost effective to just replace the glass baking dishes.
