on 12/31/2007 If you live in an older building with hardwood floors, please, please please....put down some area rugs. Not only will the people who live downstairs from you not want to strangle you, but the rugs will also attenuate the noise coming from *their* apartment into yours. Plus, you're violating your lease (usually) if you do not have anywhere from 70-80% of your floors covered. Or, at the very least, take your shoes off! But even then, some noise is inevitable. Welcome to urban living!
on 11/13/2007 If your neighbors are truly awful, call the landlord. Most leases have a "right to peaceful enjoyment" clause, so you are well within your rights to complain.
on 8/26/2007 I sat flat on the hardwood floor once while I was working on a project. I had been working on it for about three hours. I had eaten chili earlier that day and it had plenty of time to kinda build up. I farted on the hardwood and it was extremely loud, Shortly after, I heard a knock at the door. It was my roommate from downstairs!(Who is a beautiful woman!) She appeared to be worried when I answered the door. She told me she was making sure I was okay, because something sounded like a bomb going off. I just told her that I was moving furniture across the hardwood and it just makes the worst sound ever. Haha! She never knew....
on 6/25/2007 I live in an upstairs apartment, but also in an old building with hardwood floors - so everyone hears everyone else's footsteps. In order reduce the amount of noise our downstairs neighbors hear, we put rugs everywhere we can. Our landlord actually requested that we do this because apparently it really helps with noise reduction.
