Return to article: How to Clean a Toilet
on 11/22/2005 For weeks and months, I tried everything on the market to remove the unsightly ring and discoloration around the inside of my toilet. I scrubbed until my arm was falling off. I picked up "The Works" at Wal-Mart (one of the suggestions on this site). 94 cents - can you believe it? It only cost 94 cents! There was no preparation. I poured in about a cup of the liquid, swished it around for a moment or two with the toilet brush, and flushed. The toilet bowl was sparkling clean. I could not believe how great this product worked. It did the job so quickly, and it was 100% effective. You will not be disappointed, it really works.
on 11/22/2005 To empty your toilet, dump more water into the bowl. This will cause it to drain out (flush).
on 11/22/2005 Pumice stones were a godsend. I thought my stained toilet was going to have to be replaced. Nothing worked, but then I tried a pumice stone. It took some effort, but now the toilet looks like new. The best stones can be found at the hardware store, but not all stores carry them. Stay away from the beauty supply pumice stones. They are coated and won't work.
on 11/22/2005 I used to live in a place where there was a lot of hard water. It left nasty orange stains in my toilet and shower. I bought "The Works" toilet cleaner. Spray it on the water stain and wipe it off. This works wonders. Make sure there is a lot of ventilation. If you are in a closed space, it gets stinky.
on 11/22/2005 I tried Coke in the toilet and let it sit for about half an hour and scrubbed it clean! It worked great to clean the toilet without much effort!
on 9/21/2007 If your toilet is porcelain the Pumie will get rid of any hard water rings or rust. It's so easy it shocked me. Also works on grills, concrete & enamel- THIS IS THE ONLY TOOL I WILL USE FOR MY OVEN CLEANING besides a little baking soda. No more noxious fumes,
on 11/22/2005 Ok, I just moved in a house with a basement toilet that had a disgusting brown ring around it. I tried bathroom cleaners, baking soda and vinegar and finally I remebered a toilet bowl cleaning remedy I can't remember where I heard this. Add powdered lemon drink crystals (or anything with citric acid). The good thing about this is that if your pet happens to take a drink it won't be harmful. It worked very well!!
on 11/22/2005 Use a spray bottle filled with a small amount of vinegar and water. Apply to entire exterior of toilet, countertops, shower walls, mirrors. It does GREAT on faucets! Otherwise, I HIGHLY recommend Lysol tub and tile cleaner!!
on 11/22/2005 The pumice stone rules!! Where you cannot reach with the pumice stone, pour a pile of vinegar in the bowl and let it sit overnight. It will all come out with a brush in the morning. I had tried almost everything until listening to these tips on eHow.
on 11/22/2005 Don't forget to clean the rest. Wipe the seat, tank, and base with a standard bathroom cleaner and a rag.
on 11/22/2005 To clean a badly stained toilet when nothing else works, empty water from toilet at night. Line the bowl with paper towels, then saturate towels with industrial-strength cleaner. Let sit overnight, then flush in the morning and scrub with pumice or brush.
on 11/22/2005 There is a product on the market called "The Works." I clean for a living and wouldn't be without The Works for toilets and The Works Shower Cleaner. The shower cleaner stinks, but works on the hardest soap scum. Wear gloves!
on 8/6/2007 If you have a septic tank, you might want to consult a plumber prior to following some of the advice given. Certain chemicals do not interact well with a properly functioning septic system and may kill off the bacteria needed to break down waste.
on 11/22/2005 To remove almost any stain from carpets or clothes, use hair spray. Simply wet the area with a damp cloth and then spray with hair spray. Let penetrate and then remove with water. Repeat until stain is out.
on 11/22/2005 Just take some of the powdered Tang - yes, the drink - and put two tablespoons of it in your toilet bowl water. Let it sit there overnight and, in the morning, flush.
