Steps 1-7 (done in that order) is the best remedy. Most stores carry the cans of wasp/hornet spray. I purchased it at the local grocery store. Just look for it on the isle where the bug/pest control products are sold. The cans are designed to spray a powerful stream of 20-feet (or more), so just stand back a comfortable distance from the nest and take aim without any worries of a flying futile backlash. I have yet to be stung. Just make sure to stand back at or near the recommended distance stated on the spray can... I consider 20-feet between me and the nest a comfortable distance. :)
