Return to article: How to Tip a Valet
on 6/19/2008 ugh, I travel ever week for work, i get payed in the 70k range, fammily of three, so im not rich but not poor... I stay at a hotel 4 days a week... So if i tip everyone 5 dollars... lets do the math... btw i cannot expense tips!! taxi to airport 5, skycap 5, door man 5, luggage guy 5, valet 5, concierge 5.... = 30 dollars a day = 120 a week, 480 month... Guess i have to get rid of my car... Keep in mind not everyone at a hotel is rich and on a vacation... Alot of downtown hotels force you into this added service crap, otherwise i avoid it like the plague...
on 6/11/2008 I have been valet parking at a south florida resort for 7 years and to tip $2-$3 is bad advice poor reserch on this websites part. if your employees are tipping $2 for thier car to be parked then they probobly not getting the best service. $5 is a good tip in or out, but $10 or more will get your car left close by for the best sevice. If you are not sure what to tip the valet just ask 95% of the valets anywhere are honest as with any profession.
on 3/24/2008 1. If you don’t have the money to give to your valet guy parking your vehicle go find self parking and stay the **** away from valet. (maybe you shouldn’t bother going out if you are broke) 2. Two dollars is a lousy tip. Two dollars was the standard ten years ago. I support my family off of what you give me. Remember that. I have a wife and kids and I am a real person just like you. 3. Don’t tip me a dollar after I saw you flip through a handful off hundred dollar bills. You are a scumbag for flashing your money and being a cheap bastard. 4. Don’t lie about how long you had to wait. We know how long we took to get your car. We can prove it and don’t use it for an excuse not to tip. Sorry if you are the last person to get your car after a club or concert night. We don’t work miracles. 5. Don’t lie and tell us that you ’took’ care of the other guy when you came in. We kn
on 12/23/2007 I work at a casino on the strip in Vegas. I think $5 is a decent amount to tip for your car. $2 is a joke anymore. If you are to cheap to tip then go find self parking. People forget that valet is a job and we have to support familys and this is how we make money. If you have a higher end car then stop being cheap and throw a $20.
on 12/12/2007 I have been a valet for a long time and its great because it has paid my way through college. I paid for college with my tips, and my wage paid my rent. Just remember, alot of valet's split tips, so if you tip $1, those valet's split that and is sometimes looked at as a insult when there are 3-4 valets standing around. If you recieved good servive, help the kid out and shoot him a 5. Thats just my opinion. And if you dont tip, dont be surprised if it takes 10 min. to retrive your car. Valet's are smarter than you think. WE REMEMBER EVERYONE!
on 5/13/2007 Mine is a question, not comment: if you valet your car but decide to cab it home (read: too much to drink.) Of course, you must retrieve your house keys from the valet. And you may be picking up your car during.. not-exactly-business-hours..There's no doubt that you want to tip your valet when he gets you your house keys, but what exactly is the etiquitte for an occassion such as this? I would fully expect to tip generously for the trouble, especially if the valet hails or calls me a cab. And there's the cost of overnight car storage. I live in Dallas, TX where the cabs come only when called. I have no idea how to handle a situation like this. Probably shouldn't drink so much, but I really want to know.
on 11/1/2006 Ilive in Kansas in a community of approximately 50,000 people. I am a valet supervisor where we park cars at a hospital/health center. I have a crew of 9 people. We all work together very well and things usually move right along pretty smoothly. Our service is free of charge and available to everyone. The people that use are service never have to wait more then 5 to 7 minutes to have thier vechiles returned. Because we are a contract labor company the actual hospital employees, nurses, volunteers, etc.. have let us know that we are NOT to be tipped. SOme people do tip us anyway but when they do it really reflects that we are in Kansas. We usually get between .50 cents and if were lucky, up to $5.00. And that is for parking, not returning the vechile. I would like to hear others thoughts on this.
on 9/1/2006 I've been a valet for a few years, and I know guys who have been doing it as a side job for 10+ years. The average tip back then was 2 bucks, and it's still 2 bucks today (for whatever reason). Even when there is no lot charge, some of these people only flip you a buck. Some people don't realize that a buck or two isn't a good tip anymore. 15 years ago maybe, but this is 2006. If you drive a Benz, BMW, Jaguar, etc. and you're tipping one or two bucks for valet parking, expect to wait a long time for your car. Welcome to the 21st Century.
on 8/8/2006 If you tip your valet as they take your car to be parked, you're much more likely to get a prompt service on your return. Give $3-5 at first, and an additional $3-5 if you receive good service.
on 1/19/2006 Most realize that tipping 2 dollars to a valet was standard in the past. However, 2 dollars could do a lot more ten years ago than it can today. I have been a valet for quite a while, and I have calculated that an average of $3 to $4 per car, $1 per cab, and $5 to $20 per bell, is more or less accurate. If valet is free of charge, or comped fully or partially at the restaurant, spa, or any function you may be attending, don't hesitate to tip a $5 or $10 bill, especially if you plan on returning. If you're in a hurry, give the valet a $5 bill and your car will be down twice as fast. Tipping nicely will insure prompt service consistently and quite possibly a complimentary gift from your valet service. If your on a job interview, tip $5. If you need directions tip at least $3.Never give the, "I'll getcha on the way back." Every time I hear a guest say this, they either stiff me completely, or they give me a ten and a sincere apology when they do return.Valets talk to each other. If you stiff your valet, they will all know about it, and it will take a very long time to get your car.Remember, your valet can hook you up in many ways. If your asking a valet for a personal favor, thats when you break out your wallet. I've gotten plenty of $100 tips because I provide excellent service for our guests. Be good to your valet and they will be good to you. My regulars don't pay to park anymore. As of 12/28/05 My highest tip for a car was $80. Highest for a bell $100. Highest for a personal favor $500 (snuck in a bottle of wine). If you come to Providence, tip $20. Have fun.
on 11/22/2005 If you ever ask a valet to hail you a cab, tip that valet - or learn to whistle.
