on 6/1/2008 Great concepts here. In my clinical practice as a nurse practitioner I see far too many kids who are overweight and lead sedentary life. I am growing more and more concerned now that I see high blood pressure in teens and young adults. This is seriously unacceptable and will most likely lead to life-long health problems. I believe Step 4 in this article is critical. SET A GOOD EXAMPLE AND YOUR CHILD WILL FOLLOW!

on 11/5/2007 And don't forget the power of a good role model. If your child sees that exercise has a positive place in your life, he/she will follow suit. For suggestions on exercising with kids in tow, see...

on 4/26/2007 Kids like to have fun, you have to play to their liking and then get them to act on it so that they will exercise. Eg. if I know my son likes Power Rangers. Then I will come up with an adventure for Power Rangers to go and find bad guys and fight with them. I will tell them that is a mission and then plan the mission in such a way that they have to walk, cycle or do some form of exercise. In order words, play to their fantasy..kids like to imagine things..play to their liking..that's how i got my kid to play with me...

on 1/5/2006 Even calorie-burning activities, like yard work, that are dreaded by adults are fun for kids. Let your kids rake up a huge pile of leaves and jump in it, let them shovel the driveway and then have a snowball fight. The activities that adults dread are the ones that kids enjoy.

on 11/22/2005 Go rollerskating at your local rink! Burning 368 calories per hour just skating around, it's a great low impact workout that doesn't feel like exercise. Indoor skating is safer than outdoor skating, and most rinks play games, music and it's a great value for the money.

on 11/22/2005 If I ask my two daughters if they want to go walking, they always answer in the negative. If I ask them if they want to go exploring and find three things they have never found before, they always want to go. Sometimes they quickly forget about the hunt and we have some of the most wonderful conversations. They don't even realize we are exercising.

on 11/22/2005 Hopscotch is a game which you might have forgotten how to play, but it is easy to quickly draw up a game. With the Internet, I am sure you can find the rules (and other energetic games to play).

on 11/22/2005 When you're not able to go outside to exercise, find items around the house that you could use to create games that will serve as exercise for the child.
Be creative with what you do, but also let the kids help in coming up with a game.

on 11/22/2005 Don't force your child to exercise too much on a hot day. If it's hot (80-90)degrees don't make them run alot. If it's really hot exercise indoors.

on 11/22/2005 Try to do activities with your child that he/she likes. Don't force them to do anything to hard. Start them off easy, then once they get the hang of it get a little harder.
