Excellent article and advice. Right on target. I write a blog about my life shared with my husband and business partner, called: sleepingwithmyboss.com Since we have nearly 20 years of experience working and living, loving and hating and bickering together, I thought I would write about our experiences. Look into my blog and follow along as I “tell all”. I will appreciate your participation and comments. Thanks.

These are great ideas for married couples to think on. I've seen marriages destroyed because there was an illusion that everything would be ok running business together. The many variables involved put unique pressures on anybody, and especially a husband and wife. There should really be a taking of inventory and an honest look at each others' strengths and weaknesses before taking this journey together.

Working with a spouse is fun, engaging, and with both vested in the same goals can make it more successful. If you're both competitive, that's even better because it will drive you to work harder to exceed your goals. Caution - don't take 2nd place too hard. To paraphrase a great line from the movie Backdraft: "You win, we win Bull!"

You would have to be exceptionally skilled people buddies who are able to leave work at work, separate your private selves, and be completely committed to succeeding in business and in your relationship to be able to work successfully together.

Working with a spouse and sharing a company 24 hours a day could be too much of a good thing. Could you stand it? What kind of business are you planning? Would you have to spend this much time together?

If it does not work out, you lose your job, career, livelihood, and possibly your love relationship and home. You could be landed with unforseen hidden bills, unexpected expenses, even liens and liabilities on your collateral, business or home.

Working together works best when your skills and styles aren't too similar, but complement one another's. Don't even try it if both of you are intensely competitive.
