Return to article: How to Rid Your Home of Spiders
on 8/13/2007 I found a great way to get rid of spiders. Get a regular size spray bottle and fill it about 80% full with warm water. Then, add about 20 - 30 drops of essential peppermint oil to the water. Give it a little shake and then spray it around the areas where you see spiders or where they get into your house. They hate the smell of peppermint. I sprayed it around on my patio and they started running from every direction! Also, another helpful hint: Get a cat. They love to eat the little pests!
on 5/8/2007 Spiders usually don't bother me that much, but yesterday I found a huge black one crawling on the floor! It was the sice of a m&m...just not as chocolaty :) If that thing would have made it into my bed I would have freaked out like a little girl ( no offense to little girls).
on 4/27/2007 I'm a certified pest control applicator in north Texas. The tips by the staff expert are very good. The most important things you can do are regular cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, and most importantly.... REDUCE CLUTTER!!! Electonic pest control units do not work. The entomologists at Texas A&M University have proven that they do not work. Don't waste your money. If you have a severe infestation of Scorpions or Brown Recluses, call a professional. There are some residual chemicals that are effective against arachnids such as Demand CS .06%, and Demon WP .02%, Drione, DE, and crack and crevice residual aerosols. Qualified professionals know how to apply the correct ammount to kill spiders without harming people or pets.
on 6/25/2007 I was told to hang pantyhose filled with moth balls in the basement. Spiders don't like the smell and will not enter. I tried this, and it seemed to work. Also, it removed the musty damp smell from the basement.
on 8/4/2006 I suggest lemon products, like lemon furniture polish , especially for doorways and windows. Or, you could take some lemon dish soap and mix it with some water and spray around spider's hiding spots. Spider balls may work for you, but I don't find they work, they attract spiders instead.
on 11/22/2005 A friend told me about these hedge balls that keep spiders away. This really works. I have no idea what they are, but they are all natural and some grocery stores or hardware stores sell them. They are green and actually attractive when placed in a bowl or on a plate. Another great thing is they totally disintegrate over time.
on 11/22/2005 "All spiders are good," sounds great until one is crawling on you! My philosophy is simple. If I see a spider in the house, it is going to die. Here is the ultimate weapon: Mice glue traps. You know, the cardboard, with the glue. When the mice walk on it, they get stuck. So do spiders! You can buy a 4-6 pack for about 2 dollars. Lay a trap in each corner (adjust for little kids and wandering pets), of the room where you will not accidentally step on it (bad news). You can also staple them (they are white and blend in) to ceilings and walls. You will not see any more spiders in your house, except the ones stuck on the glue traps! It is amazing how well it works! I even lay a few in attic, crawlspaces, and under cupboards. You will never freak out finding a spider again! Remember where all the traps are, you do not want to accidentally get them stuck on you! And be advised; when you empty full traps that many of the spiders are still alive. Try it !
on 11/22/2005 Use diatomaceous earth, (which is a natural product, not a pesticide) around the perimeter of your house. It is a very fine dust, so wear a dust mask. I use it once or twice a year. Insects and spiders walk through it and die, because it "cuts" their outer surface and kills them. I also use the Black and Decker electronic pest control units inside the house. Both of these together will vastly decrease your pests of all types!
on 11/22/2005 Spiders Like PROPANE! "Smylie"spiders are attracted to propane. To keep them out of your RV/Motorhome propane lines (water heater, refrigerator, etc.) hang long pieces of any cheap cat flea collar near flu openings. For some reason, they don't like the smell. IMPORTANT: If a spider crawls into a propane line to the water heater, etc. they will make a web inside the line and propane CANNOT get through. Therefore, when you try to light it, it may blow up in your face...
on 11/22/2005 Put BORIC ACID behind refridgerators, walls, cabinets and any place you can get the boric acid. Use a long straw to get behind counters and stove. In a few days, you will be rid of roaches!!!
on 11/22/2005 Working in basements all day, I learned a home with walnuts placed in strategic places, will keep spiders away. Drill a hole in the shell of nut and place anywhere, i.e. insulation in crawl, or window ledges.
