Return to article: How to Know When to Wash Your Dog
on 2/14/2008 Make sure that when you are rinsing the soap from their face that you are careful not to get water in their nose. It hurts as bad for them as it does for us.
on 11/4/2007 Most critical thing when bathing a dog or when he goes swimming is, as mentioned above, keeping his ears dry to prevent infection. The best way to do this in addition to using cotton in the ears when possible is to use a canine ear cleansing solution whenever your dog gets wet. They contain drying agents to keep your dog's ears from becoming hospitable to yeast and bacteria. Just a squirt rubbed into each ear will do the trick.
on 6/6/2007 Florentino's comment is dangerous...do not use people shampoo on dogs, it's WAY to harsh and can eliminate needed natural oils and cause itchy, dry skin...which causes hot spots! not good!
on 11/22/2005 Dogs hate to get water in their ears, and it is also not healthy to let water in them. To keep the water from entering, tuck some cotton into the ear (not too deep) before bathing. Then remove when done. If your dog usually freaks when you wash his head, you will find that this will eventually help keep them calm once they figure out that the water is no longer going to get into the ear.
on 11/22/2005 Only bathe your furry companions when they are obviously dirty. They need the natural oils in their skin, and bathing them unnecessarily will do more harm than good.
on 11/22/2005 Some dogs are more susceptible to ear infection if water is left in the ears. So, be sure to dry out those ears after a bath or playing in water.
on 11/22/2005 I use a baby wash with added oatmeal extracts. It works well for mildly dry skin and it won't sting their eyes. Also, since it's so mild, it's good to use if they have to have frequent bathings.
on 6/11/2007 I wash my dog with pantene 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner, then, I put jojoba (spelling?) conditioner on her. People stop me on the street to tell me what a beautiful, shiny coat she has and the conditioner makes her smell good, too. Note: I use Advantage flea control so my reason for bathing her is cleaning and deoderizing not eliminating pests
on 11/22/2005 find an old piece of material, cut it to your desired size, placing it on your dog's neck.tie a knot at the end but not to tight,or else you could strangle you dog.if you are making a bandana or a doggy hat, find some material, again cut it to desired size, and place it over your dogs head for size-wise,if it fits cut two wholes in the material just above the ears, place it over your dog's ears, and tie a knot at the bottom, again not to tight.
on 11/22/2005 For dogs who are prone to hot spots, chronic itching, or smell from skin allergies, use Head & Shoulders for oily hair. The zinc oxide is an antibacterial/antifungal. After many years of using medicated dog shampoos, this is the only thing that CURED it.
on 11/22/2005 Most people like to bathe Buddy when they first bring him/her home to get rid of the litter odour and freshen up their new puppy. Only use puppy shampoo for the first year. Weekly bathing will remove natural oils from skin. Bathe only when needed.
