Return to article: How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh
on 4/26/2008 I've heard that you should 'crush' rather than trim woody-stemmed flowers such as roses. What do you think of this? If you recommend this, what is the best way to crush the woody stems. The reasoning that I've heard for this is that it allows the stems to take up more water.

on 11/23/2007 One of the best pointers that I have learned regarding keeping flowrs fresh is to actually cut the flowers WHILE they are submerged in water - this way they immediately take a sip of water rather than air. this keeps them fresher, longer! Thank you for the article!
on 12/23/2006 This was advised on the cable show.."Queer Eye for the Strait Guy?,,,,,,,,,,the funny blonde guy swears that by addding a coupoe tbspoons of VODKA (yes, alcohol!!!).....that it makes flowers last longer and keeps bulbs tighter longer..........keeps the "perky".....along with all the other known steps, i.e. ... cut stems on slant, change water every day.........etc......he also added thatalso adding one crushed aspirin with the vodka also adds to longer lasting, perkier, beuuuuuuuuutiful flowers.........i tried it 3 times, and i can tell you truthfully.........it really works....what a dramatic difference....my flowers lastest freakishly loner. .... and they were "perkier" and "tighter" in the "buds"! Dont take my word for it..........TRY IT> you will see for yourself!!! phyllis harvey, los angeles
