on 6/24/2009 Petite modeling, commercial modeling, and parts modeling are great fields to get into as well. You can have a successful career in modeling without being a fashion model. They can be very lucrative if you can get into the right agency.

on 6/21/2009 I worked as a model in my teens and twenties, and afterwards went on to become an agent and later an agency owner in Santa Barbara. Check your state's laws re: model and talent agencies fees. Here in CA, the agency percent was certainly not 20-25%. Also, while legit agencies will not charge you for portfolios, they don't provide them for you- you have to create it yourself. Usually by modeling free for photogs in exchange for pix. Once you get legit work you'll have tearsheets for your port. There is also no mention here of headsheets, which are pretty important. Most small towns don't even have agents or agencies. This article doesn't really tell how to find an agent.

on 5/31/2009 Models with body mods, like me, should seek print modeling. Runway does not like a lot of tattoos. While one day I hope to see more tattooed models on the runways, I'm sure that clothing designers may feel like attention is being drawn away from their designs. Also, the bit about runway girls being at least 5'7" is true, I'm a shortie-pants so I couldn't do runway anyway lol.

on 6/11/2007 Everyone is so quick to say it shouldn't cost money to get into the industry. There are a lot of scams out there, but it isn't true that it is a scam just because money is involved. Most models will have to pay for their own marketing materials, such as portfolio and comp cards. Sometimes an agency will cover the costs, but you have to look at it like school. Some people get scholarships and get their way paid. But that's a small percentage, it's the same with the modeling industry. Even if an agency does pay the up front costs, that money will just come out of the first job you get.

on 11/22/2005 A reputable modeling agency will bring you on for free. You should not have to pay for any photo shoots or portfolios, they will get their money back from these when they find you work!

on 6/11/2007 An interesting tidbit to know: Runway models earn as much as $750 an hour. Franken models (models for photos of hands, feet, etc.) earn as much as $500 an hour. It's best to be at least 5'7" if you want to be a runway model.

on 11/22/2005 The tip calling for one to bring a short friend to test agencies is unjustified. Models not meeting height standards for runway work does not mean they are put out. Average and short models get plenty of work and success doing print modeling. In a photo, no one can know your exact height, and agency and photographers know this. There are plenty of baby, child, teenage, middle age and up models of different sizes and shapes.
