What you can do to make things a little more interesting is use beads. To add a bead, thread one onto the "core" strands (the shorter ones in the middle; I like to have 2), then continue knotting. This way, you will have a bead with two strands on the outside.
A word of warning though: Before you buy or make your beads, make sure that the 2 strands will fit through the hole, otherwise it's a waste.

on 11/22/2005 Instead of always using the string on the left-hand side, alternate left and right, and the necklace will be flat instead of twisted!
