But it makes sense to look at the designer's past work, and assess if you think the style and sensibilities will be good for your own advertising and marketing. Note on students: While they are lower cost and sometimes innovative, this is not always true. Often they lack the experience to create refined, professional work the way a freelancer who has been working for 5-10 years would. Good luck!
on 11/22/2005 I completely disagree with the tip to disregard students. A good Graphic Design student will produce quality work at almost half the price of experienced designers. Hiring a student to intern for your company and produce marketing materials can save your company thousands of dollars and give that student a chance to build a portfolio. The trick is to pick the right student.
on 11/22/2005 Many times a fresh, student brain will provide you with the most recent, innovative or exciting designs. Not all students complain they have more homework than they can handle, let alone gripe about the payment. Keep in mind, students are typically poor and are very happy when they do get paid, in addition to obtaining additional work for their portfolio or resume.So when someone tells you to beware of students, ignore that ridiculous nonsense statement. Simply interview them the same way you would a freelance designer or ad agency. Be smart about your choice, after all, it is your choice.
on 11/22/2005 Whatever a student does for you will take twice as long as it would a professional - students lack the experience. You both may agree to a low market price initially, but when they realize just what they're getting paid per hour they usually balk. Their schedule is already filled with classes and such and they're not going to be adequately compensated for their time. If you're looking for a bargain, look for a freelance graphic designer. You'll both walk away much happier.
