on 9/1/2008 Re: I finally got my neighbors dogs to stop barking!

I used to have a problem with my neighbors dogs that would constantly bark day and night. At first I thought it would stop but it went on day after day. I finally confronted my neighbor about the problem and he said that he would try to do something about it.

I work very long hours and try to get as much sleep as possible but I am constantly awakened by the barking dog many times during the night. You cannot imagine how frustrating this is unless you have been in this situation.

I finally ended up going on the internet to research my problem and I am so glad that I did. I ended up buying a compact disc from a website. You play the disc and it actually stops the dogs from barking. I put the disc in, pointed the speakers towards the dogs, and nearly fell out of my chair when it actually worked!!! Somehow, the dogs can hear the

on 8/8/2006 If your dog barks when you leave the house, ignore him for at least 10 minutes when you get back home. Give yourself time to hang up your coat, pop away the keys, and when you are ready - call the dog to you. Do not let him cry for your attention. You are the alpha dog, not him.

on 8/8/2006 After you're sure there's no reason to be barking, or it's gone on too long, squirt some lemon juice in their mouth. Use the lemon juice in the plastic lemons you find at the grocery store. It may take a couple of times, but eventually, all you'll have to say is, "Do you want some lemon?" or even showing it to them will do the trick.

on 11/22/2005 When your dog is barking, don't get mad and scream or yell at him, because that will only make him bark more and loader.
A dog may also bark because he has to go to the bathroom. Make sure, he isn't ancy and barking because he has to go to the bathroom.
And another thing, praising is very, very important! Don't forget to praise your dog when he stops barking!

on 11/22/2005 When your dog starts to act anxious or scared, don't give him hugs or kisses. The dog thinks there is something wrong and gets even more scared. Some time when it isn't storming, put your dog in a room and play storm sounds from a CD or tape - softly. Then when the dog isn't bothered by it, turn it up a little. Continue this until the dog isn't bothered when it is really loud.

on 11/22/2005 To get my Beagle to stop barking, we worked to recondition her. The first time she barked, we called her inside using a firm but non-threatening voice. Once inside, we petted and talked to her, fed her a treat or gave her a rawhide to chew. After a few minutes we let her back outside. Each time she barked, we repeated the process. Eventually she learned to associate barking with going inside. Since she loves to sniff the perimeter of the yard, going inside is exactly the opposite of what she wants. Once she made that connection, her barking has become almost non-existent. If she does bark, we know to pay attention.

on 11/22/2005 I suggest this only after trying other things and coming to this as a last resort. Read and try other advice people have given for this subject first. Every dog's personality is different. You can find the collar at some pet stores. We found one at a department store. They run around $50 (CND funds).

You would only need the dog to wear it a couple of times. They realize that when wearing it, they will get a shock when they bark. Let them know why they're getting the collar on as well as showing them the collar and telling them it is a collar. After a couple of times using it, if they bark excessively, you only need to show them the collar or ask them if they want the collar on. They will stop barking. For the odd time they don't stop after showing the collar, put the collar on for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, praise and remove the collar. It's quite effective.

DO NOT leave the collar on for more than 30 minutes! That would be cruel and a dog needs to bark to communicate. You don't want them to stop barking entirely. Again, use it only as a last resort and for excessive barking only! Use the collar as a tool and not as punishment!
