-Black eyeliner works great for outlining (especially Mary Kay, it works well and writes easily). -Ben Nye makeup is awesome. I prefer it over Snazaroo. But, it does need to be topped with translucent powder to set it. -Practice on your hand. Then you get a really good idea how easy your design will be and you can really get a feel for it.

A face painter must be in a happy mood in order to paint a happy face.

Do not use foundation first, t will interfere with the application of the makeup. As a professional face and body painter, I insist all my models have clean skin. No makeup foundation, sorbolene or hand cream; the grease makes the makeup go on blotchy.

Do not use reds and yellows around the eyes because they contain oxides and can be very harmful.

If you are artistically challenged, it can be hard to know where to start. Go to Google. Switch to 'images' view. Type in "face paint" and the name of whatever your child wants to be e.g. "Face Paint tiger." This will bring you up a heap of pictures that you can use for ideas.

A mirror over your shoulder and high up (to make them look up at you) will help keep kids sitting still, and looking at you.

There is no need in worrying about red and yellow paint around the eyes, if you are using FDA approved face paints! You do need to worry about all colors if you are using something other thanthe proper products. Snazaroo Face Paints are a good product to use if you are interested in face and body painting. There are others, but this is my preference.

Some sort of base layer (makeup foundation, sorbolene or hand cream) applied lightly with a wet face cloth before painting will help clean the face for a more even application of paint, and make it easier to get off later.

Always use a face paint made specifically for the face and that has FDA approved ingredients in it. Never use acrylics or poster paints on the face. Just because a product is non-toxic does not mean it's for the skin. As explained to me, the stomach has acids that process non-toxic items ingested, however when you put something on the skin, it may seep directly into the blood stream. Sometimes the acrylics can burn into the skin leaving permanent scarring and then the parents can sue you, winning immediately because you used a product not made for the skin.

Face painting is a great way to raise money for charities. It's always popular with kids at outdoor festivals, carnivals, sporting or other events. You can charge $2 to 4 dollars per face, and each should only take an artist 5 to 8 minutes to do.
