Comments on How to Open a Stuck Jar Lid

  • Keisenbeis Feb 03, 2011
I was ready to take back my jar to Sam's and complain until I remembered eHow. Having tried all the tricks I could remember, I used the triangle end of the bottle opener. Amazing! Didn't have to hurt my old hands at all. Maybe we need to now all these tricks!

a really good way is to batter the edges of the lid slightly and that will work like a charm 1st time

Yes, you are right! By putting a thick heavy duty rubber band around the lid of a vacuum sealed bottle I was able to open my jar. I almost gave up after applying all the procedures above, until I used my life saver rubber band. Thank you for the tip.

I tried using the rubber bands that come from veggies in the market and was able to open a really stubborn jar. Thanks for the tip.

I just use a sharp tipped knife and stab the top of the jar, it breaks the vacuum of the jar to easy to open and takes less time for the jar to be open.. to easy!

You can also wear a rubber glove to open difficult jar lids. It works like the rubber band or duct tape trick but is less trouble. They also make special rubber discs to use just for the purpose of opening stuck lids but the rubber glove trick works equally as well. Also, the trick of tapping a butter knife around the edges (gently) works great too! Just be sure to tap gently so that you don't break the jar and ruin the food product in the process.

I find that what works best is to turn the jar totally upside down and gently hit it (squarely or roundly) on the wood butcher block in my buckboard wagon. It reverses the pressure on me and the lid.. and you can eat those delicious peach preserves that Mrs Ingalls gave you last summer much quicker.. yum..

If it's a new jar, turn it upside down, hit it 2-3 times on the bottom of the jar to release the air pressure (you can feel and sometimes the vacuum release), then turn it over and it usually opens quite easily!

If it's a new unopened jar, I've found if you turn the jar over and hit the bottom of the jar 2-3 times, it releases the air built up at the top of the jar (you can hear the vacuum pop!) and it usually opens quite easily.
