Return to article: How to Remove a Ring That's Stuck on a Finger
on 5/11/2009 OMG - It REALLY works! I had my doubts, but I did exactly what everyone said - 1) slip floss under the ring (use double or triple or quadruple stands - 1
on 5/3/2009 Believe it or not, I used Aveeno Daily Moisturizing lotion that come in a tube, not a bottle. My ring was stuck on my finger for 2 months. I did every, the windex trick did not work for me. I started to get a chemical burn from all the things I was trying. I bought aveeno lotion in desperation to just try anything new to get this ring off! Well, to my surprise, my ring moved...I mean actually move up my finger a bit!!!! So, I kept pulling little by little adding more lotion as I went. The lotion was slippery enough to make the ring slide, but also gave you the ability to hold onto the ring without sliding off!! I finally was able to get it up to my knuckle, and worked and worked and finally it came off. It hurt a little, but not as bad as I thought it would!! My finger is still indented where the ring was. Don't give up, there is something out there that will work. I will NEVER p...
on 4/14/2009 Windex TOTALLY WORKS!!! I thought my finger might have been too far gone for it to work. It had gotten swollen over night as my newly re-sized wedding band was choking my poor ring finger. My finger looked like a sausage and I was worried I was gonna hafta wake up my husband to drive me the hospital. But I gave Windex a shot and 5 to 6 squirts later--I'm able to type this sans wedding band choke hold! The finger is still a little swollen, but I had to let others know to try the Windex. It may save your life. Cheers!
on 1/23/2009 I didn't wear my rings during my first pregnancy because I had a lot of water retention. When I had my baby, though I had gained 30 lbs I made the mistake of putting them back on. They got stuck. I didn't lose a pound and now two years later I want to get pregnant again. The idea of going through more weight gain and more swelling during the pregnancy and wearing my wedding band and engagement ring which already hurt, was literally making me panic. I woke up many nights hyperventilating at the idea of it, I'm serious. So I tried: 1-5 minutes with my hand over my head; 2-some minutes with my hand in icy water until numb; 3-Windex on that finger, some careful twisting and pain, and it was out in a second. 4-repeated #3 for the wedding band that was slightly smaller and cutting through my skin. It hurt a lot, but now I have no reason to panic and be a happy preggo!! Yay!
on 1/20/2009 windex definitely works it just takes a minute or two and you really have to squeeze the ring off it is a painful experience but it comes of after a while just make sure you put an ice pack or something on it for a few minutes before the windex or 409 to reduce a little bit of the swelling
on 1/18/2009 I work for Kay Jewelers part time, and usually we have to cut rings off expecting mothers all the time. No thinking myself I got my ring stuck and did not want to cut it off. it was so tight it was cutting me. I held my hand above my head for about 5-10 mins and then squeezed a baby fresh wipe on the ring and my whole finger. it was cold as well! I then twisted the ring side to side forward and backward to rock it up to my knuckle and then I kept bending my knuckle and it was painful but it came off. I hope this helps. If it wasn't so early in the am before the mall opened I would have cut it off. Kay Jewelers or Zales any place like that should have a little cutter that cuts the rings bottom and bends it off.
on 12/26/2008 I got a bug bite that made my ring finger swell so much that I had a hard time removing my wedding band and engagement ring. Another time, my finger swelled again but this time the ring was seriously stuck. After reading this and the comments, my husband was able to help me get it off by running my finger under cold water, holding it up above my head, spraying windex on it and pulling it with much force! It took a good 3 tries (oil, lotion, dish soap) and some pain but finally windex did the trick!
on 12/9/2008 Windex is amazing. I managed to get a ring off that had a bunch of sharp edges sticking into my skin. Didn't get cut or anything. There was pain, but not enough to complain about.
on 12/5/2008 3 kids, 50 lbs, and 20 years later...wedding ring stuck. Tried cold, warm, dental floss (but that is hard to do when you're alone---very hard to get a good smooth, clean wrap). Tried plastic wrap and the Windex. My finger just got really sore and puffy. Gave up for about 1/2 hr. Held my arm up above my head for 10 min. Grabbed a roll of the clear magic tape--the kind you use to wrap gifts. Wrapped that around my finger REALLY tight, bent my finger down to spray windex underneath, sprayed the heck out of the top surface...and after 10-15 seconds of pulling & twisting...voila! The tape even protected my finger!! Didn't hurt hardly at all! Thanks for all your ideas. Wouldn't have tried that without them. Whew! Off to the jewelers tomorrow!! :o)
on 11/24/2008 I've had this problem and tried everything, including Windex, but nothing worked. I finally had it cut off, but don't waste your money at the doctors! Go to a qualified jeweler and they will cut it off for FREE in less than a minute. Then, if you wish, they can enlarge it to fit, for a fee.
on 11/17/2008 Another way to remove a stuck ring is to put a length of dental floss between the finger and the ring, then lather the finger or use mineral oil or cooking oil to make it sippery. Roll the length of dental floss around and around the finger. The ring will come right off. You do need to have the finger cool. We use this method in the Emergency Room, but I will not charge you $27 for this information!
on 11/16/2008 I am almost six months pregnant and have noticed that my engagement/wedding bands have been increasingly tight. At 12 or 13 I sprained my left ring finger while playing basketball and since then, that finger has been more swollen than the others. I've also gained some weight. These three things in combination have made my rings extremely difficult and next to impossible to remove. My husband and I have tried soap, hand lotion, ice water & elevation (to reduce the swelling), windex, wrapping my finger (like the orthopedic surgeon suggested) and nothing has helped. I'm going to have my rings cut off by either a fireman or jeweler. I'm leaning toward the jeweller as they will be able to fix it afterward.
on 11/10/2008 ok WOW. YES the windex worked!!!!!!! I had been spending the last WEEK trying to get that durn blasted ring off my finger. W/ the Windex, maybe 2 min. YESS it hurt but my ring finger never looked better ;) lol
on 11/9/2008 Oh my goodness! After trying everything I could possibly think of in my home that was slipper (KY, conditioner, olive oil, dish soap, etc...) THE WINDEX ACTUALLY WORKED! I held my already swollen finger over my head with ice for ten minutes and proceeded to spray my finger with the Windex..it took 30 seconds, some twisting and pain but it came off! Thank you!!!!!!
