on 8/8/2006 1) Again, smoke outdoors if at all possible. You folks in the Sunbelt and Hawaii, there's no excuse for being indoors anyway (I'm typing this from AZ smoking a Punch in the backyard next to my waterfall pool).
2) Keep fine cigars around and in a quality, maintained, humidor. Your appreciating guests will love the host.
3) Always have extra cigar specific ashtrays on hand when entertaining.
4) If you are in America, keep your Cuban supply under wraps. Don't be a braggart, quietly and gently offer them out to the good friends/family that can appreciate them; and don't reveal your sources.

on 8/8/2006 1) Enjoy a nice drink with a cigar when you can. A good single-malt Scotch, a nice cognac, even a good microbrew often will go well with a good cigar.
2) Smoking outdoors, as a lot of other posters have suggested, is a good way to relax with a cigar.
3) Making the assumption that liberals hate cigars because they don't agree with you politically is stupid and childish. This liberal likes cigars.

on 6/11/2007 ITwo comments...
Re: suggestion #4...Moving to another room to smoke. Please be aware, that, more than likely, someone else may enter or otherwise use a room after you have smoked in it. That is still particularly nauseating to nonsmokers.

The best advice I can find for cigar smoking is, unless an area is specifically designated for such activity, DON'T!

And, regarding the chewing submission...the individual suggested chewing on a stogie... whether a Cuban to impress or a more common one to satisfy oral frustrations...as being "offensive to "liberals" as well"...I think those who object to the chewing are more in tune with common sanitation and visual appearances than any political leanings. Unless, that is, the individual has divided liberals and others into such as perhaps liberals being those who don't support the NRA but do support the ERA.

I can see no political proclivities specifically attributable to one who smokes, or rather chews, a cigar.

Thank you.

on 6/30/2006 I have found the best place to smoke a cigar is when I am outside camping in the woods with some of my friends (who also like cigars).

Also, as a side note on the proper place to smoke cigars, I have found that on Princess Cruise ships they have a cigar bar on every ship, at least all of the ones I have been on. It's called Churchill's Lounge. You can go to their website and check it out.

on 4/1/2006 I savor the flavor of every cigar. If you really enjoy cigars, how are you able to put them out when two inches of tobacco are left? I smoke every last bit of my cigars! I smoke it down to the nub!

on 6/11/2007 Don't smoke cigars in the first place! They're probably much worse than regular cigarettes and they're bad for your health!

on 11/22/2005 Political leanings notwithstanding, I enjoy smoking a good cigar as far as it's taste will allow, but then I let it go out and continue with mock smoking for up to several hours. This, I'm sure, is an oral thing, but then isn't all smoking some kind of oral thing? Except for when the cigar gets soaked, I treat this flavor as a whole different extension to the smoking process.

However, I am amazed at how many people respond negatively. I think it has become so foreign to see someone smoking indoors, or in the workplace, that just looking like you are smoking is enough to get people upset.

I respond to comments by saying that no one would have a problem if I were sucking on a lollipop - so why the problem with a cigar?

on 11/22/2005 There is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Learn from outdoorsmen how to dress for bad weather. Get out into nature, it is the most relaxing place to have a cigar.

on 11/22/2005 1. You should always light a cigar with a match, as lighters taint the cigar with unburned fuel.
2. Never smoke a cigar down to a stub - leave at least two inches.
3. Don't knock the ash off, instead rest the cigar on an ashtray when not actually smoking it and allow the ash to fall off naturally.
4. Always hold the cigar between the thumb and fingers, never in the "V" between the forefinger and middle finger - this is considered vulgar.
5. A cigar is meant to be savored, so it should be enjoyed while stationary - traditionally after a meal, with port or brandy. Only people working on Police Forensic squads should smoke a cigar while walking about or working (they traditionally light cheap cigars on entering a murder scene to blot out the smell of the body).
6. You are only supposed to taste the smoke. Do not inhale it deeply into your lungs (as you would a filtered cigarette), you will soon feel nauseous and dizzy. It is hard to be suave and urbane if you are turning green and become sick in the shrubbery.

Hotels, bars, and clubs traditionally only allow smoking in a Smoking Room, Saloon Bar, or possibly the Billiard Room. If you do not wish to smoke, then do not enter a Smoking Room. If smokers refrain from smoking in mixed areas, then you should not complain when they do so in a smoking area, as by the same rights Smokers have a right to complain about non-smokers ruining their enjoyment. The thing about rights and manners is that they work both ways.

on 11/22/2005 Cigar smoke can travel easily, making it unpleasant for others. If there is a chance of someone complaining, don't bother. It will only diminish the enjoyment of smoking your cigar. Try not to dismiss others so quickly, you may find you get similar respect.

on 11/22/2005 Cigar smokers already have a bad name in this "liberal" society. Cigars can be enjoyed without being lit. Just put one in your mouth and walk around - unlit. This angers liberals too. :)
