I've found what works best is to thoroughly soak the affected area with white vinegar or lemon juice, and then apply heat to the area with a blow drier or iron set on "low" until the area has dried. This can be followed up with an application of alum or cream of tartar for further effectiveness.

This was fantastic. Just squirt the liquid onto the carpet and scrub straight over it with a cloth. I turned a patch of the carpet a clean white, and the rest of my carpet looked dirty afterwards.

Use baking soda and water mixed with any wash detergent. Apply to carpet. Wait 5-10 minutes. Scrub and flood with water. This is safe around animals.
