Before you lift heavy weights, do sprint intervals, hop on a bicycle or throw some footballs, there is one step that cannot be left out. That is a good stretch. Stretching and flexibility training are as important to exercise as the overload you need to put on your muscles and cardiovascular system to see a benefit.

Pre-season football is right around the corner and there has already been a lot of changes in players that can have a huge impact on the way the season unfolds. Some of the most notable happenings are Terrell Owens going to Bufalo, Kyle Orton going to Denver for Jake Cutler, and of course, the never ending Brett Favre saga. My biggest question is, why is his name pronounced "Farve" when it is spelled "Favre?"

There is an ongoing saga taking place in South Carolina that is making national news. Custody has been taken away from a woman who has a 555 pound, 14 year old son. The word out on the street is "child obesity is child abuse." I couldn't agree more with that statement. If you allow your child to get that out of shape, you need to be stopped. You might as well be beating them like a regular child abuser would do. The only differnece between the two is that you are killing your child at a slower pace. I am not being judgmental or critical, I am just stating facts and being honest. If this type of behavior continues, our country will be bankrupt inside of 5 years.

Here is a sobering thought. I was checking out the latest numbers on obesity rates in the United States yesterday. It's not good. It's actually very bad, and I'm not happy. Every single state in the union has a 25% or higher obesity rate. That's one in every four people. If the nation doesn't start changing, and I mean really fast, the health care system is going to bankrupt us inside of 5 years. But the good news is, Hideki Matsui hit a game-winning home run in the 9th last night to give the Yankees a 2-1 victory over the Orioles.
