The electric fuel pump on a Johnson outboard is an integral part of the cover of the vapor separator tank found on electronically fuel-injected motors. The vapor separator tank, a bizarre combination of a large carburetor float bowl and a small gas tank, is the waypoint to which the low-pressure fuel pump moves fuel as it comes from the fuel tank, en route to the injectors. It exists because the injectors are picky about the pressure of the fuel they receive, and since the low-pressure pump cannot provide sufficient pressure consistently, the electric high-pressure pump takes over, midway.
