Over the past few years, nail designs have become a true art form pioneered by celebrities and everyday women alike. Some designs are simple, while others are intricately detailed, taking hours to complete. And like a performance, each nail design is short-lived. Still, many treat their fingernails like tiny palettes that serve as an extension of their personal style. Take singer and actress Brandy's nails, pictured here, for example. Each nail is different from the next, but all play with patterns and colors in a similar way.

Updated French Manicure

Actress Kerry Washington passes on the traditional French manicure for something more playful. "She blows up that boring look with an ultra-shiny black polish and white, angled tips," notes Katy Parsons, mastermind behind the Nailed It blog. "A striping polish in white is perfect for getting the angle."

"[Actress Aisha Tyler] flips the party nail on its head by making her accent nail the simplest and adorning the rest in rows of rhinestones," Parsons says. While gluing each rhinestone takes time, this look can be recreated with a little patience and lots of nail glue.

Television personality Jenni "Jwoww" Farley proves that you don't have to reserve bows for birthday presents. "You can find these little baubles online and in nails stores," Parsons advises. Use a nail glue to adhere the tiny bow to your accent nail -- or to all five nails if you prefer.

Retro Polka Dots

Retro-inspired black and white polka dots are befitting of actress Olivia Munn, especially against her bright pink dress. To recreate, use a dotting tool to apply white dots on black nails. No dotting tool? Not to worry, Parsons says. "Try a bobby pin, blunt pencil or the end of a sewing pin."

"[Actress] Anne Hathaway channels the animal kingdom with her feathered dress and her leopard nails," Parsons notes. Get the gradient on your own nails by using a makeup sponge, dipped in your chosen three colors and blotted over white base polish. Next, apply light pink spots and partially outline them in black for the leopard look.

Graphic Geometric

The geometric nails worn here by Scottish singer and songwriter Emeli Sande match with just about everything in your closet. "Paint your nails white, tape off a triangle shape along your cuticle and paint the rest of your nail black," Parsons instructs. Once the polish is dry, "rip off the tape and take on the town."

"Check out the rounded, stone-shaped studs on [actress] Busy Philipps' fingers," says Parsons. "They’re the perfect complement to that mod turquoise." To create this look, paint nails turquoise. Once dry, use tape to "block off the areas that you want to remain turquoise" and "paint over the tape and exposed nail with black," advises Parsons. After 15 minutes, peel off the tape and glue on studs for extra measure.

Luxe Gold

Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez always looks luxe from head to toe. "Her nails are no exception, decorated with gold in all varieties," Parsons says. For that ultra-luxe vibe, try an authentic 24-carat gold nail polish over white nails. Alternatively, use a faux gold foil top coat.
