Be it trying your hand at photography or finally learning to tango, taking a new class with your better half is an easy and fun way to discover something new -- and rediscover one another. Here are nine inspiring and useful classes couples should consider.

Painting

It doesn’t matter if neither of you has picked up a brush since kindergarten. Painting requires little overhead, which means classes at a variety of levels and price points are offered at community centers, colleges or nearby studios. Phoenix artist Ruby Farias’ studio Me the Artist features special date night sessions for couples that last about two hours. “Painting can be a stress reliever and empowerment tool,” Farias said. “It allows us to express ourselves, and anyone can benefit from this.”

Dance

It may have been a few years since you first danced together or perhaps the inaugural tango was just months ago. Either way, recapture some of those fun (and, OK, occasionally awkward) sensations by channeling your energies into learning some new steps. For example, Arthur Murray Dance Centers have locations nationwide that allow you to get into the Latin vibe with salsa lessons, go vintage with the foxtrot or explore the classic waltz -- hand in hand, together. The first class is free.

Cooking

Cooking

Take an exotic trip without having to worry about the euro conversion rate or enduring lengthy lines at the airport. A culinary class gives you a taste of a romantic region and comes with a much shorter journey, smaller price tag and a guarantee of where your next bite to eat will come from. Many specialty kitchen shops host workshops and some, like Sur La Table, hold specific date night classes themed around cuisine from dreamy locales such as Greece, Tuscany and Provence.

Sign Language

You speak some Spanish and he knows a little French. But consider learning a language that doesn’t require rolling Rs or memorizing conjugations -- with the bonus that you really have to pay attention to each other's gestures. American Sign Language is ranked as the fourth most studied language in higher education, according to the Modern Languages Association, and baby sign language courses that allow parents to communicate with their nonspeaking little ones are also popular.

Paddling

Exercise your communication and coordination skills as a twosome while giving yourselves a workout canoeing or kayaking. The American Canoe Association lists various levels of paddling courses offered throughout the country, or look to your local rowing clubs for their class offerings.

Massage

Massage

Give yourselves another reason to get close by learning the hands-on techniques behind a proper massage. Not only will you learn therapeutic skills you can use at home, but you can put the money you save on spa massages toward a romantic dinner out instead. Community colleges offer inexpensive classes, or you can seek out someone who specializes in couples massage, such as massage therapist Larry Swanson, who has taught partner massage classes at his Seattle practice since 2003, or the New Jersey Holistic Health Services, which conducts at-home classes.

Group Fitness

Instead of heading to the free-weights area while she makes a beeline for the elliptical trainer, stroll toward the same destination. Working out in a class environment will spice up the routine while the combination of camaraderie and friendly competition provides extra motivation. “If you are part of a couple, you will find great support if you can get the other person on the bandwagon with you,” said Chicago-based personal trainer and fitness coach Melanie Bolen. “I know lots of people who have strengthened their relationships this way.”

Photography

Make those impromptu photos you take of each other worthy of more than just Facebook by picking up some professional tips to make those memories more visually interesting. Some studios, like Orcatek Photography Workshops in Phoenix, offer introductory courses as well as specialized workshops focusing on areas such as fine art or boudoir photography.

Home Improvement

Spending a day staining the deck or tiling the great room may not sound like the ideal date. But learning how to do improvement projects together will come in handy as you continue to nest and make your house a home. Also, knowing that you both worked hard to remodel the patio or replace the ceiling fan in the nursery by yourselves comes with its own rewards. Typically, large home improvement stores, like The Home Depot, offer these workshops for free.
