Prom is one of the biggest nights of the year, and as fun as it can be, there are a ton of little things — from your dress and accessories to your makeup and shoes — that have to be taken care of to make sure you're looking your best. Fortunately, with these 10 prom-perfect hairstyles, you can check one item off your to-do list and rest assured that you'll look unbelievable on the special night.

Chic Chignon

There’s nothing more timeless and elegant than a simple, traditional chignon, like the one actress Camilla Belle wears at an event in New York City. “It’s chic, cool and when done effortlessly, will always get lots of compliments,” say Alberto VO5 hair expert Chris Lospalluto. Get the look by dividing hair into two sections on one side of your head. Next, tie your hair into a knot, pull one end to the right and one to the left, then secure with bobby pins.

Ballerina Bun

For a look that’s pure elegance, pull hair up into a beautiful ballerina bun. You can keep it polished and traditional or opt for a bigger, fuller bun, like the one reality TV star Lauren Conrad wears here at an event in Hollywood. To get the look, pull your hair up into a high ponytail, then slide it through a bun maker (like a mesh doughnut or a rolled-up sock). Cover the bun maker with your hair, then tuck and secure remaining strands with bobby pins.

Pumped-Up Ponytail

Add a little drama to even the simplest ponytail by channeling some ‘60s style with a mini-bouffant, like the one seen here on actress Reese Witherspoon at the 2011 Oscars. Spritz damp hair with volumizing spray before blow drying to add some body. Then, starting at the crown of your head and moving backward, tease your roots. Smooth your hair back and secure, then pull it into a ponytail.

Beautiful Braids

Beautiful Braids

Even at their most basic, braids can look stunning on any hair type. Go for a simple side braid or fishtail braid, or spice it up with multiple or more elaborate braids. Lospalluto says a good rule of thumb is to keep braids simple if your dress is detailed and busy. Likewise, a simpler dress can take more intricate braiding, like the look seen here on actress Jessica Alba at an event in New York City.

Polished Pony

Want to show off the detailed neckline of your dress while looking sleek and smoking hot? Go for a slicked-back, super-straight ponytail, like the one actress Blake Lively is wearing here at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. Blow dry your hair straight and smooth strands with a straightener. Then, pull your hair straight back into a tight ponytail. Seal the deal by adding a dab of hair gel or serum for extra shine and no frizz

Slick Pixie

Slick Pixie

Short hair is all the rage right now, and it can look just as amazing and special occasion–worthy as any long-lock look. If you’ve got an ultra-short pixie, try slicking it down — like actress Emma Watson does here at a movie premiere in New York City — for a sleek and edgy look. Want something a little softer? Blow dry and flat iron your hair, then sweep your bangs to one side.

Faux Bob

Faux Bob

Even ladies with long hair like to pull off a short look every now and then, and it’s a style that can look stunning at prom. Get the faux-bob look — like the one singer Taylor Swift shows off here at the 2010 Met Ball in New York City — by using a curling iron to create a headful of curls; gather your hair into a loose ponytail and secure at the end of your hair. Finally, tuck your hair up and under toward the base of your neck and secure with bobby pins.

Flowing Waves

Flowing Waves

Bring the glamour on your big night by creating gorgeous all-over waves, like the ones actress Megan Fox shows off here at the 2013 Golden Globes. Get the loose, shiny waves by curling voluminous hair away from your face using a barrel curling iron, straightener or wave iron. Comb through curls and set with a flexible-hold hair spray for a last-all-night look.

Sleek and Straight

Sleek and Straight

Sometimes the simplest looks can have the greatest impact, and that’s definitely the case when it comes to super-sleek and stick-straight hair. The style, which looks especially divine on long locks, can be refreshingly easy to get. Separate hair into multiple sections, then work from the bottom layers to the top of your head to smooth a flat iron over each section from root to tip. Finish off with anti-frizz and shine serum for the sleekest look possible, like the one seen here on actress and singer Selena Gomez at a movie premiere in Los Angeles.

Voluminous Curls

Voluminous Curls

For a look that’s romantic and glamorous all at once, there’s nothing better than a head of voluminous curls. After blow drying your hair with a volumizing spray, curl it with a barrel curling iron or hot rollers. Use a flexible hair spray to set curls and, if you prefer, pull your hair half up — like actress Dianna Agron does here at an awards show in West Hollywood — for a sweet and sexy touch.
